Mother's Day Bed and Breakfast tours offered

Virginia City's Bed and Breakfast inns will open their doors to the public for free tours and light refreshments from 1-4 p.m. Sunday for Mother's Day.

The four inns are: The B Street House Bed and Breakfast, the Cobb Mansion, Edith Palmer's Country Inn and the Chollar Mansion, formerly a bed and breakfast. The four B&Bs are located in historic buildings with ties to Virginia City's Bonanza days.

Historic Preservation offers scavenger hunt

The Carson City Historic Resources Commission will celebrate Historic Preservation Month in Carson City with the first Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt.

The hunt will consist of finding 20 historic architectural features, all located within the historic district. The contest will run from May 17-31.

Completed entries must be submitted by 4 p.m. May 31, to the Planning Division at 2621 Northgate Lane, suite 62.

Entries with all correct answers will be entered into a drawing to be held June 4. One individual winner will receive a lunch for two at Adele's. For Carson City School District participants, the winning class will receive a pizza party.

Letter carriers annual food drive is today

Letter carriers from the Reno, Carson City, Fernley, Fallon, Sparks, Gardnerville, Yerington, Minden, Incline Village, Dayton, Alturas Calif., and Truckee, Calif., post offices ask postal customers to help the hungry and donate to the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive across America today.

This is the nation's largest one-day food drive. All food collected will go to a local food bank, which will make distribution to area families in need.

Customers should fill a plastic bag with food items and set it by their mailbox for collection.

Food items should be non-perishable items, such as dried, canned and packaged products. Items most needed by food banks are canned meats, soup, fruits and vegetables; and packaged non-perishables such as pasta, cereal, powdered milk and vegetables.

Many area post office lobbies also will have food collection barrels or boxes set up in lobbies.

Engine company grilling today at railroad museum

Warren Engine Co. No 1 will be flipping hamburgers and roast hot dogs today and Sunday at the Nevada State Railroad Museum Depot, on U.S. 395 across from Fairview Dr.

The grills will be going from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. both days. The event is a fundraiser for the station. Call 882-7270.

Big Mama's Show & Shine Car Show today

Get a jump start on the car show season with the 10th annual Big Mama's Show & Shine Car Show from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. today at the Lampe Park Pavilion.

The free event features music, crafts, food, friends and beautiful cars. All proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels in Douglas County.

Brand new this year is the Big Mama's Peoples Choice Award. Ballots will be passed out to the public from 11 a.m.-noon and collected until 1:30 p.m.

Vehicle registrations will be accepted at Lampe Park from

8 a.m.-10 a.m. today.

Lion's Club members will cook up lunch for $5, with a choice of barbecue kielbasa sandwich or hot dog with chips and a drink.

DCHS second hand Rose Fashion Show

Douglas County Historical Society's Second Hand Rose Fashion Show and Sale takes place today at the Douglas Co. Museum & Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395, Gardnerville.

The cost is $15 and includes the fashion show, green salad and dessert, and shopping for recycled clothing. Shopping begins at 10 a.m. with salad and dessert served at 1 p.m.

All profits benefit the Douglas County Historical Society. Thanks to all who have contributed clothes and accessories for the sale. Call 782-2555 for more information.

Children's Museum offers summer memberships

Special summer memberships to the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada are being offered. Family admission charges are covered for $20 per family from June 1 through Sept. 30.

Flea market this weekend

The Carson Indian Community Flea Market will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. today and Sunday at 2900 S. Curry St.

The flea markets will take place through the summer with booth space available for $25. Vendors of all types, including arts, crafts, household goods, food, antiques and collectibles (no hazardous materials or weapons) are also welcome to set up a booth.
