Gentner, Grunert leads Carson swimmers

Led by Luke Gentner and Tim Grunert, the Carson High boys swim team finished second with 424 points at Saturday's High Desert League Championships at the Carson Aquatic Center.

On the girls' side, despite good days from Jamie Showalter and Sophie Holmes, the CHS girls placed fourth with 295 points.

Grunert won the 100 breast (1:03.52) and was second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.83). He also swam a leg on the second-place 200 and 400-yard free relay squads.

Gentner placed second in the 100 free (52.33) and was second in the 50 free (23.19). He also swam a leg on the 200 and 400 free relay squads.

Zach White placed third in the 100 free (54.78), while Jacob Branco was third in the 500 free (5:16.51) and fifth in the 200 free (1:59.20). Brian Lester won the diving with a score of 290.35.

Showalter was second in the 500 free (5:35.43) and second in the 200 free (2:04.55). She also swam a leg on the Senators' 200-yard medley relay team and a leg on the fourth place 200 free relay group.

Holmes was fourth in the 100 breast (1:18.17) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:36.40). Abi Pittman took third in the 500 free (5:41.23) and Erin Chang was fifth in the 50 free (27.80).

SOFTBALL

MUCKERS SWEEP HAWTHORNE

HAWTHORNE - The Muckers qualified for the 1A playoffs by sweeping Hawthorne, 14-0 and 17-4, Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, Tori Hynick scattered eight hits in her route-going performance, and she helped herself with a hit and two RBIs.

Sierra Esau went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs, while Daisy Jones and Amanda Bohl collected two hits and two RBIs each. Katie Defebaugh went 1-for-3 and drove in three runs.

In the second game, Hynick struck out two and pitched a four-hitter. The game was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Hynick helped her cause by going 4-for-5 with five RBIs, while Defebaugh went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Taylor Ballinger went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, while Denali Fickus went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

CHS SENDS 3 TO REGIONS

Carson High will have three golfers in the field Monday morning at Empire Ranch when the 4A Regional tournament gets under way,

Action begins at 11 a.m.

Garrett Gingell, Nico Brewer and Colin McCulloch qualified as individuals.

The top two teams and the top five individuals not on advancing teams qualify for the state tournament May 17-18 at TPC-Las Vegas.
