(AP) - A state judge says the American Cancer Society has standing to bring suit against the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority over a Nevada law permitting smoking at certain trade shows.
District Judge James Wilson ruled Monday in Carson City that the Cancer Society's lawsuit can proceed.
Voters in November 2006 passed the Nevada Indoor Clean Air Act prohibiting smoking in some indoor places. The 2009 Legislature then amended a stalking bill to permit smoking at trade shows that are closed to the public and sponsored by the tobacco industry or an association of convenience stores.
The Cancer Society argued the voter-approved law couldn't be changed for at least three years, and the bill allowing trade show smoking was invalid because it involved two different subject matters.
