Gilbert J. Martini, 89, passed away peacefully at his home on May 5, 2010. He was born in Mound House, Nev., on June 16, 1920, to George and Carola Martini. Preceded in death by his brothers, Giliante (Lefty) and Elio Martini and sister Jennie Fladager. He is survived by his companion of many years Delores Schallhorn; two nephews Robert Martini and Graydon Fladager and three nieces Linda Posner, Shelley Gordon and Denise Fladager. Most of Gilbert's life was spent in Northern Nevada in and around Lovelock, Dayton, Reno and Carson City with the exception of WWII. He joined the U.S. Navy and served a tour of duty in the South Pacific. Gilbert had many hobbies but most of all he loved to hunt and fish with friends and family, collect and restore historical Nevada antiques and, if you knew him well, he would repair, restore or collect any clock brought his way. One of Gilbert's proudest memories was as a Boy Scout in Dayton when, at the age of 15, he was selected as a rider to help commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Pony Express Ride from St. Joseph, Mo., to Sacramento, Calif. His leg of the ride was from Dayton to Carson City at full gallop. The mail arrived safe. Gilbert was a kind and quiet man and his last wish was to have no fuss or funeral service. Gilbert will truly be missed and always loved by family and friends.
