ELY (AP) - The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on a plan to remove about 72 wild horses from the range 50 miles northeast of Ely.

BLM officials say they hope to begin removing the animals from the Moriah Herd Area in August.

The roundup is part of the agency's Ely Resource Management Plan, which was signed in August 2008.

It calls for the removal of wild horses and the elimination of herd management area status for areas that do not provide sufficient forage and water for healthy mustang populations.

Public comment will be accepted until June 18.
