Douglas fares well in the pool

Douglas finished second and Carson was fourth at the NIAA 4A regional swim meet Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The Tigers had 546 combined points, while Carson was fourth with 404. Reno won the title with 672 points.

Haley VonSchottenstein of Douglas won the 50-yard free (24.48) and the 100-yard breastroke (1:05.71). She also swam a leg on the winning 200-yard free relay (1:41.37), and 200 medley relay squads.

Michelle Forman also had a big day for the Douglas girls, placing third in the 200 IM (2:13.07) and winning the 100 fly (58.26). Forman also swam on the aforementioned relay squads.

Jamie Showalter will be the lone representative for Carson High's girls swim team at next weekend's state meet. Showalter placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking a 1:59.13.

On the boys side, Carson's Tim Grunert finished third in the 100 breast (1:02.56) and swam a leg on the Senators' winning 200 free relay squad (1:33.51) along with Ashton McIntosh, Zachary White and Luke Gentner. Carson's 400 free relay squad also will move on thanks to a third-place finish (3:32.22). Gentner, White, Jacob Branco and Jose Reed were on the squad.

For Douglas, Eric VanBeuge was on the winning 400 free relay squad (3:27.38) with Colby Cain, Cameron Morefield and Kyle Johnston. The same quartet also won the 200 medley relay (1:45.49). Van Beuge was second in the 100 free in 50.30.

DAYTON ADVANCES TO STATE

FERNLEY - Behind the pitching of Mackenzie Cole, the Dayton Dust Devils knocked off Fernley 2-0 in eight innings to win the best-of-three series on Saturday afternoon.

Fernley forced the third game by knocking off Dayton 1-0 in eight innings. Both of Saturday's games went eight innings.

In the second game on Saturday, Cole fanned nine and didn't walk a batter to out-pitch Bailey Johns, who fanned five and walked five.

The game was scoreless through seven. In the eighth, Natasha Wells walked and moved to third on Cole's single. Cole stole third and a passed ball scored Wells. Cheyanna Burrows followed with a groundball in the infield, and a sliding Cole beat the throw home.

In the opener on Saturday, Johns got the decision over Cole. Johns fanned four and walked two, while Cole fanned 13.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth when Dayton made a two-out error.

Dayton will play at either 10 a.m. or noon on Friday at Bishop Manogue.

CARSON HOSTING 2A STATE

Carson High has been selected to host both the 2A state softball and baseball tournament this coming week.

Both tournaments will be held on Friday and Saturday.

1A-3A TRACK

SIERRA LUTHERAN WINS 1A TITLE

WINNEMUCCA - Led by Wade Meddles and Nick DePaoli, the Sierra Lutheran boys track team won the team title at the 1A regional meet Saturday.

Sierra Lutheran finished with 207 points, more than 100 ahead of Smith Valley. On the girls' side, Sierra Lutheran (62 points) was third behind Wells and Smith Valley.

Meddles was second in the 400 (53.47), won the 800 (1:58.43) and won the 1,600 (4:17.36). DePaoli was second in the 100 (11.61), won the 200 (24.23) and won the 400 (52.28).

Becky Grabow won the 1,600 (5:49.64) and the 3,200 (12:27.47).

In 3A boys, Dayton's Kage Walker moved on to state in the high jump (1st, 6-feet) and the long jump (3rd, 19-9.75). Cameron McGifford was fourth in the 300 hurdles (42.43), Ray King was fourth in the pole vault (11-6) and Manuel Castaneda was fifth in the shot put (44-7).

In 3A girls, Erika Garcia was third in the 400 (1:02.74), fifth in the 100 (13.48) and fifth in the 200 (27.37). Kathie Arias won the discus with a throw of 127-11 and was second in the shot at 36-2.5. Alyse Fletcher was fourth in the triple jump (30-4.75) and fourth in the long jump (14-6.5).
