ELKO (AP) - Elko County's schools chief says the district is going to have to cut about $2 million from its budget next year, leaving a fund balance of at least $5 million.

Superintendent Jeff Zander says his goal is to maintain programs for students, and jobs and benefit levels for employees.

District trustees will hold a budget hearing next Wednesday.

Proposed reductions include a $25,000 pay cut from Zander's salary, a 10 percent cut in discretionary spending, leaving vacant administration positions open, and eliminating central office school police chief and police officer positions.

About 20 vacant elementary school teaching positions would remain unfilled, and funding for a full-time coaching position and two special education positions would switch to grants.

Zander says the district also will seek concessions from employee union members.
