Yankees 11, Red Sox 9

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Rodriguez hit a tying homer off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning and Marcus Thames connected moments later for a two-run shot of his own, giving the New York Yankees a wild 11-9 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.

With one out and a runner on third, Rodriguez hit the first pitch into the visitors' bullpen in left-center to tie it at 9. Papelbon (1-3) got Robinson Cano to fly out but hit Francisco Cervelli with a pitch before Thames drove his next delivery over the wall in left.

Thames was mobbed at home plate after New York's first game-ending hit of the season. He also got the customary cream pie in the face from pitcher A.J. Burnett, part of the routine when New York had 15 game-ending hits last year.

Javier Vazquez (2-4) got a most unlikely win, striking out Kevin Youkilis with runners on the corners for the final out of the ninth. Manager Joe Girardi only went to the struggling starter because his depleted bullpen was missing David Robertson and Joba Chamberlain.

Twins 8, Blue Jays 3

TORONTO (AP) - Justin Morneau homered twice, Delmon Young also went deep and the Twins beat the Blue Jays.

Morneau went 3 for 4 with a walk and four RBIs. He hit a solo homer off Rommie Lewis in the sixth inning and added a two-run drive off Shawn Camp in the eighth, his first multihomer game this season and the 13th of his career. Morneau also homered Sunday at Yankee Stadium and has hit safely in 10 straight games.

Jose Bautista homered for the fourth time in three games for the Blue Jays, his team-leading 11th, but Toronto's four-game winning streak ended.

Kevin Slowey (5-3) earned his first win in five career starts against the Blue Jays as the Twins won for just the fourth time in 14 games at Toronto.

Dana Eveland (3-3) took the loss.

Royals 4, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Kyle Davies allowed two runs in six innings, and the Royals defeated the Orioles for their third win in four games under new manager Ned Yost.

A crowd of 9,299 - second-smallest in the 19-year history of Camden Yards - turned out on a wet, chilly night to watch the teams with the two worst records in the AL. The all-time low attendance at the stadium was 9,129, last month for a game against Tampa Bay.

Davies (3-2) gave up seven hits and a walk to earn his first win in four starts since April 26. The right-hander yielded two singles in each of his first three innings, then retired nine of the final 11 batters he faced.

Joakim Soria worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his 10th save.

Brad Bergesen (3-3) suffered the loss.

Rays 4, Indians 3, 11 innings

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Jason Bartlett laid down a bunt to drive in the winning run in the 11th inning as the Rays beat the Indians.

John Jaso hit a one-out infield single against Jamey Wright (1-2) and went to third on Gabe Kapler's hit-and-run single to right. Bartlett then laid down a bunt on the first base side of the mound that Wright fielded and was forced to make a desperation toss toward the plate that went over catcher Mike Redmond's head.

Andy Sonnanstine (1-0), the sixth Tampa Bay reliever, struck out two during a perfect 11th, helping the Rays improve to a major league-best 27-11 this season.

Rangers 4, Angels 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Derek Holland pitched into the sixth inning, Nelson Cruz drove in two runs, and the Rangers beat the Angels.

Holland (2-0) allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings in his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on May 12.

Neftali Feliz got three outs for his ninth save in 11 chances as the Rangers opened a seven-game homestand after being swept in a three-game weekend series in Toronto.

Mike Napoli and Torii Hunter homered for the Angels, whose three-game winning streak ended.

Angels starter Scott Kazmir (2-4) gave up four runs and nine hits in seven innings, his longest outing of the season.

Athletics 8, Mariners 4

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kevin Kouzmanoff and Adam Rosales each hit two-run homers, Gio Gonzalez pitched a four-hitter over seven innings and the Athletics ended a five-game losing streak, beating the Mariners.

Rajai Davis drove in two runs, and Daric Barton and Kurt Suzuki also drove in runs for the A's, who have won eight of their last 11 homes games.

Gonzalez (4-3) matched his season high for innings pitched. He gave three runs on four hits.

Matt Tuiasosopo hit a home run, and Jose Lopez had two hits and drove in three runs for the Mariners, who lost their third straight and five of six overall.

Ryan Rowland-Smith (0-4) gave up a career-worst seven runs in 4 1-3 innings, his shortest start.
