Fontenot wins in Arizona

Paul Fontenot, a Douglas county resident, recently won the Pro Eliminator division at the inaugural Lucas Oil Spring Nationals in Arizona.

Fontenot was competing in the 8.0 second/1⁄4-mile bracket.

Fontenot, the owner-driver for Slick Racing, obtained the Pro Eliminator license at the end of the 2008 season. Fontenot finished fourth in points in 2009 with his pickle fork hydro boat 'I'm Back-Hot-n-Bothered.' With a season ending win in 2009 and this month's win, Fontenot has two wins at Firebird International Raceway.

Registration open for

First Tee program

Registration is now open for summer junior golf programs with The First Tee of Northern Nevada, including special LPGA-USGA Girls Golf classes.

Classes are offered mid-week and Sunday afternoons at eight area golf courses, including Eagle Valley. Cost is $80 per session. Each session includes 6-to-8 lessons. Financial assistance is available, easy to apply for and completely confidential. First-time enrollment for children of Guardsmen and Reservists is at no cost. Golf equipment also is provided for participants who do not have their own clubs.

Registration can be completed online at www.tftnn.org. Class schedule and registration forms may also be downloaded from the website or may be requested by calling 851-2332. Classes are available for beginner to advanced youth golfers ages 7-18 years old.

Silvestri golf tourney

set for Saturday

The Bobby Silvestri golf tournament is scheduled for May 22 at Empire Ranch Golf Course.

Proceeds go toward Silvestri's fight against pancreatic cancer.

The tournament will be a 4-man scramble. The cost is $100 per person, which includes raffle prizes and a steak dinner. There will be awards for closest to the hole and long dive.

Mott, Silsby win

Silver Oak events

Jim Silsby shot a net 64 to win the Silver Oak Senior Men's Club event on May 11, and Shawn Mott also shot a net 64 to win the men's club's individual stroke play tournament on May 9.

Steve Alcalay (65) and Don Fox (68) finished second and third, respectively. Kevin Johnson (70) and Larry Johnson (71) were second and third in the men's cub event.

Wayne Graham won closest-to-the-hole honors when his tee shot on No. 6 ended up 5-feet 1-inch from the cup.

Kennady wins EV

Kathy Kennady scored 69 points to win the Tin Whistle tournament held at Eagle Valley West on May 12.

Karin Pitcock was second with 67 and Amy Phelps was third with 63. Marti Veverka and Dee Dee Murray tied for fourth at 61.

Kim Boykin was closest to the hole at No. 5 (6-5) and Pitcock was closest at No. 17 (9-8).

Nichols, Sullivan

record holes-in-one

Jim Nichols aced the 173-yard par-3 eighth hole at Empire Ranch on May 17. Nichols used a 6-iron for his ace. It was his eighth ace of his career.

Leland Sullivan, playing at Thunder Canyon, aced the 135-yard par-3 eighth using a 9-iron.

Bowen leads way

after first round

Hazel Bowen shot a net 68 to take the first round lead at the Ladies Club tournament at Thunder Canyon.

Mary Anderson is a stroke behind at 69, while Lynn Greenman is third at 71. Claudia Goodnight holds down the fourth spot with a 74.

Meanwhile, Leland Sullivan and Glen Cheney shot a 60 to win the blind draw four-ball tournament, also at Thunder Canyon.

Keith Gottschalk and Tony Kane were at second with a 61, while the teams of Mitch Brust and Vern Hamilton, and Dan Culbert and Bob Pike tied for third.

Tryouts set for

Tigersharks

The Carson Tigersharks swim team, which is open to boys and girls between 5 and 18 years of age, are holding tryouts for their summer swim team on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 4:45 p.m. at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The cost is $150, which includes swim instruction, free entry for practice. Star Club insurance, swim cap and T-shirt, three summer meets and end-of-the-year banquet and party.

Basketball camp set for Carson Middle School

The Carson Basketball School, a camp for boys and girls entering fourth through ninth grade in the fall, has been scheduled for June 8-11 at the Carson Middle School Gym.

The girls will go from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., while the boys go from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $100 in advance and $120 at the door.

Doug Whisler and John Paulsen, who are the coaches at Carson Middle School, will conduct the camp. They will work with campers on ball handling, rebounding and defense, post moves and shooting.

9-ball league

The Flashbacks took the lead in the Comstock Division of the American Poolplayers Division.

The Flashbacks have 81 points, three better than Dean's Machine and five better than the Rattlers,

Daniel McRae of Cornbread & Whiskey lead the 6-9 tier with five points, while Frederick Osterhagen is second with four points. Jason Kochamp and Roger Alther of Scratch Masters are tied for the 4-5 tier lead with five points each. Rachel Hurt of Rattlers, James Panos of Scratch Masters and Derek Sheldon of Flashbacks are tied for the lead in the 1-3 tier with four points.

Role Models and Big Dogs in the 8-ball league have qualified for the local team championships in June.

Women's tennis group

off to Palm Springs

A women's over-50 tennis team has qualified for the USTA Senior National Tennis Tournament in Palm Springs, Calif., set for Oct. 8-10.

The Zephyr Cove Club team won the local playoffs in March by defeating the Lakeridge Tennis Club and the Tahoe Donner club. Zephyr Cover then won the District Championships in Sacramento in April, going 2-1 on the weekend. They moved on to the NorCal Sectionals in Walnut Creek and went undefeated in the three-day tournament.
