All sorts: Mr. John P. Meder has composed a new beautiful schottische, which will be on sale at J. G. Fox's. The old Frisbie house, on the corner of 6th and Carson Street, which has been occupied by a saloon, is closed. Many an impecunious thirsty old tippler will bemoan this ravage of hard times.

120 YEARS AGO

Livening up: There is now beginning to be life in the lumber camps of the Sierras ... the ax echoes among the pines and the blue wreath of smoke curls upward from the chimneys.

70 YEARS AGO

Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, commander of the United States Antarctic service expedition returned from the south pole. The United States government expressed great concern that some foreign country might "grab" the Antarctic region, which it is thought may thaw out in another thousand years and be adaptable for farms and golf courses.

50 YEARS AGO

Junior American Legion baseball team downed Babe Ruth White Sox. Terry Graham started on the mound for the White Sox and was relieved by Walter Honyumptewa. Pat Allison was the starting hurler for the American Legion team.

20 YEARS AGO

(Photo caption) Thomas Robert (Rob) Baker, son of Tom and Chris Baker of Carson City, was among those featured on the cover of the 1990 edition of The American Legion magazine as members of the Old Guard featured in the magazine as sentries protecting the rich history and symbolism of the Arlington National Cemetery.

Community awards finalist chosen. Academic of the Year: Tom Badillo, Kathy Bakst/Paula Davies, and Nick Reinhardt. Artist of the Year: Stephanie Arrigotti, Karen Chandler, and Carol Foldvary-Anderson. Athlete of the Year: John Chirila, Darrell Rasner, and Nicole Scott. Boss of the Year: Robert L. Crowell, Richard Linkul and Steve Smith. Humanitarian of the Year: Dorothy Crosby, Lora Myles and Sam Waldman.

• Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
