CARSON CITY (AP) - Nevada's top election official says a group running ads backing governor candidate Brian Sandoval is violating state campaign laws.

Secretary of State Ross Miller says the Alliance for America's Future failed to register as a political action committee before starting an ad campaign supporting the Republican candidate.

Miller tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal he'll ask a state judge in Carson City to issue a temporary restraining to stop the ads until the group complies with the law.

Violating the law can carry a fine of up to $5,000.

Virginia-based political consultant Barry Bennett coordinated the ad campaign.

He says the group is independent of Sandoval's campaign and is not a political action committee bound by state election laws.
