Tigersharks receive $6,000 grant

The Carson Tigersharks swim club has been awarded a $6,000 grant from Pacific swimming for their efforts in making competitive swimming more accessible and affordable for the entire community.

The grant, according to team officials, was designed to increase multicultural, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity and to foster an inclusive environment at all levels of the sport of competitive swimming.

Last year, the Tigersharks lowered their monthly dues for new and existing members.

"This is a risky step for the Tigersharks' board members," head coach Gaby Phalan said. "The team is non-profit and operates on a minimal annual budget. Monthly dues only pay a small portion of the team's overall expense, and the Tigersharks rely heavily on fund-raising efforts and hosting meets throughout the year.

"The board felt strongly that cost shouldn't be an obstacle for kids wanting to swim and determined that lowering the dues was best for the community and for the long term growth of our team."

The team will have grant money put toward the development of a scholarship program for their competitive program. The team hopes to launch its new scholarship by the summer break. Updates will be posted on the team's website at tigersharks.org.

The team has established a new program called the "Star Club." It's a non-competitive program for kids 5 to 18 that focuses on beginning stroke technique and having fun. There are two practices a week and the cost is $45 per month.
