The Bighorns opened their 2010 season with a 9-8 come-from-behind victory over the San Francisco Seals Saturday at Western Nevada College.
The local collegiate team retruns to action today for a double-header starting at noon. Both games will be seven-inning games.
"We're off to a good start," Bighorns coach Dennis Young said. "We got behind 8-0 early; got off to a slow start. We didn't quit. We battled back. It's good considering this is the first time we've played together. We had a chance and we took advantage of it.
"Joey (Webb, relief pitcher) did a great job."
The Seals scored all eight of their runs in the first three innings, four coming in the second. Starting pitcher Ryan Shepard failed to convert double plays on two comebackers, and his throwing error extended the inning. He settled down and threw two scoreless innings before departing after five innings.
The Bighorns cut the lead to 8-3 in the fourth thanks to run-scoring hits by Tim Lewis and Shane Kockenmesiter.
The locals exploded for six runs in the sixth to take a 9-8 lead.
A run-scoring single by WNC's Jon Sigado, bases-loaded walks to Eric Maupin and Chris Houle, a sacrifice fly by Jeff Young and a two-run double by Kockenmeister accounted for the scoring.
Lewis led the offense with four hits, while Kockenmeister added three. Sigado chipped in two hits with Houle and Adam Miller contributing one each.
Webb allowed juts two hits and two walks in his four-inning stint. He also fanned three batters.
