Furlong trounces challenger for Carson City sheriff

Ken Furlong made history Tuesday night when he became only the second Carson City sheriff to be elected to a third term in office. Of the 18,880 votes tallied, Furlong took home 60.75 percent to Bob Guimont's 39.25 percent.

"I'm over the top thrilled with tonight's results," Furlong said. "I cannot thank this community enough. What happened tonight has not happened in 50 years. It's the first time in 50 years the community said, 'Sheriff's Department, we like what you're doing and keep doing it.'"

Though many sheriffs have tried, just Lester Smith in the 1950s and now Furlong have ever succeeded in getting elected to a third term.

This was Guimont's second bid. He was Furlong's challenger when Furlong first won office in 2002.

"I want to thank everyone who was involved in supporting us in Carson City," Guimont said. "We had about 40 percent of the community who rallied around us and trusted us and we are very thankful and appreciative to them."

"I'm sorry I let you down," said Guimont, currently a deputy in the Carson City Sheriff's Office. "I'm just very thankful for all the support we've had out in the community."

When asked if he thought he might make a run for the office again, Guimont replied, "Oh, boy!"

"That's not on the top of my list today. The top of my list is my family right now. I put them on the back burner for just about nine and a half months so I'm going to next weekend take my wife to dinner and go back to spending time with my family like I should."

Furlong said this election has solidified in him that he is on the right path. Now that the campaigning is over, he wants the turmoil brought about by opposing sides to disappear from the department.

"I'm glad to get back to the business of law enforcement. Politics is not my forte," he said. "I enjoy the excitement of law enforcement and I always have."
