RENO, Nev. (AP) - Two Nevada men have been sentenced to six months in prison for the fatal shooting of five wild horses on federal land about 150 miles northwest of Reno.
Defense lawyers for Todd Davis and Joshua Keathley argued for probation in federal court in Reno on Wednesday. But U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert McQuaid said the two Lovelock men need some time alone to think about their senseless killing of the mustangs last November.
U.S. prosecutor Sue Fahami asked for a year in prison. She says the cold-hearted killers left the wounded animals behind to suffer a long, painful death.
Defense lawyers admitted the act was senseless. One said it was "boneheaded, drunken behavior," but that it lacked any criminal intent.
The judge shot back, "Drunken and boneheaded is not an excuse."
