Senior center to

host Veterans Day celebration

The Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane in Gardner-ville, will host its 11th Annual USO Veterans Day Celebration from 10:30 a.m. to noon today.

Speakers will include Lionel Motta, Adjut-ant of the American Legion Department of Nevada and Staff Sergeant Todd Lore-man. Sheriff Ron Perini will be Master of Ceremonies.

The Douglas High School Jazz Band will perform, an a flag presentation will be made by the Carson Valley VFW Post #8583.

This event is open to the public. All veterans and widows of veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms, in part or in full, and/or their medals.

Democratic Women to meet Saturday

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club will meet at noon Saturday in the East Room at Grandma Hattie's Restaurant.

The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss Whither, Wherefore and How: An analytic planning session to decide how best to proceed for the very important next two years.

New license plate to help fund programs

An effort which started by collecting 1,400 wildlife enthusiast signatures over five years ago achieved a major milestone in October when Nevada's Commission on Special License Plates approved the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) license plate for production.

The plate's design must still be finalized to meet Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety technical specifications, but it is hoped the plate will be available for sale sometime in early 2011.

Proceeds from the sale of the "Conserve Wildlife" plate, designed by Nevada wildlife artist Jani Ahlvers, will provide funding for NDOW's wildlife education and volunteer programs.

Emblem Club hosts Indian taco dinner

The Emblem Club #507 will host an Indian taco dinner with all the fixings at

6 p.m. Thursday at the Elks Lodge, 515 N. Nevada St.

Donations needed for Christmas gift bags

The Young At Heart Senior Citizens Club in conjunction with the Douglas County Senior Center with help from the students of Gardnerville Elementary School and Douglas High School are preparing Christmas gift bags for the recipients of Meals-on-Wheels and Douglas County homebound seniors.

Assembling the gift bags is scheduled for Dec. 10 at the Douglas County Senior Center. The gift bags will be delivered between December 14-16.

Young At Heart needs donations of small presents such as sample size shampoo, conditioner and hand lotion, Chapstick, playing cards, games, candy, cans of nuts, washcloths, hand towels, socks, gloves and ornaments. They also need sugar-free candy for diabetic clients. Deliver donations to the senior center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville or call the center at 783-6455, Annette Muller at 265-1948 or Paul Lockwood at 782-6583 for pickup.

Footprinters plan meeting at Casino Fandango

The Carson Valley Footprinters, Chapter #72 will hold its monthly dinner meeting Nov. 18 at the Casino Fandango in Carson City.

A no host bar starts at

6 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7 p.m. Guest speakers will be Kathleen Bent, director of the Douglas Mental Health Clinic and her assistant, Theresa Miller. Their topic will be mental health.

Volunteer council positions available

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Shade Tree Council.

There are three volunteer openings to be filled. The Shade Tree Council provides advice on matters concerning the development, maintenance, management and promotion of a safe, healthy and attractive urban forest in Carson City.

For these vacancies, the terms will expire January 2013. Applicants should be aware that a minimum commitment of up to 10 hours a month is expected. Appli-cations will be accepted until the positions are filled.

Supervisors also are seeking applications from individuals who may be interested in serving on the Carson City Cultural Commission.

There are two positions open for "Citizens at Large" for three-year terms that expire January 2014.

The purpose of the Carson City Cultural Commission is to serve as the official adviser to the Carson City Board of Supervisors on matters related to the cultural life of the community.

Applicants should be prepared for a minimum commitment of up to 10 hours a month. Applications will be accepted until Dec. 15.

Applicants must be Carson City residents and registered voters to qualify. All applications submitted will be considered public information.

Public invited to take part in nuclear talk

WNC Emeritus English Professor Michon Mackedon will offer two free lectures about Nevada's nuclear legacy, historically and in present day at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 at the WNC Douglas campus, and at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at the WNC Carson City campus.

The lectures are intended to stimulate conversation and civic engagement around one of two themes that will be chosen by the hosts of each event: The dilemma faced by the United States if plans to build the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear repository are permanently discontinued; or an examination of Nevada's nuclear legacy in literature and other cultural manifestations.

Senior genealogy class offered

A Geneology Class will be offered from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 16 and Nov. 18 at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center on Beverly Drive.

Seniors have to know basic computers to take this class. Cost is $15, and they can come to the finance office at the senior center to register.

Introduction to Computers will start again from 1-3 p.m. Jan. 4-27. Cost for this class is $40. The center has all new computers with Windows 7.

A Digital Photo Workshop will be coming in the near future.
