Carson robber sent to prison

A Carson City man who held police at bay after robbing a convenience store in September was sent to prison Tuesday.

Donald Newbury, 39, a welder, was sentenced to 22 to 96 months on a charge of felony burglary.

According to arrest reports, Newbury entered the Jackson's Market at Rand Avenue and Highway 50 East just before 11 a.m. Aug. 27 and demanded the clerk empty the register.

The clerk tried to walk away from the register but each time she was ordered back by Newbury, who acted as if he had a gun in his pocket.

After receiving the cash, Newbury returned to his room at the Rand Motel. A man at the motel directed police to Newbury after deputies showed tenants a photograph of the bandit from the surveillance video.

After a brief standoff, Newbury was arrested.

Also before Judge Jim Wilson on Tuesday:

• Joseph Alex Kendall, 23, was given a suspended prison sentence of 12 to 30 months in prison on the condition he successfully complete up to five years probation on a drug possession charge.

• Steven Kozlowski was sentenced to 12 to 30 months in prison on a felony third-offense drunken driving.

• Gregg Eugene Rowland, 46, pleaded guilty to sex offender failure to register. He faces up to four years in prison when sentenced Jan. 4.
