Just when it looked like the Carson City Library could not add any more events and activities into its busy schedule, the October calendar has been released.
October programs, which involve collaborations with the schools, the community and the Nevada Appeal, focus on Literacy for Life, getting library cards (with the logo created by the Teen Art Club and assisted by CAMPN) to more than 7,000 area students, expanding Homework Help and BrainFuse, and presenting a celebration on Oct. 16, featuring the "Shakespeare of the American West," Bobby Bridger. Bridger headlines a day of activities at the library and will present excerpts from his CD set, "A Ballad of the West," as well as readings from his biography of William F. Cody, Sitting Bull and Buffalo Bill: "Inventing the Wild West." The singer/
songwriter/poet/author is scheduled to appear at
3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, and the Literacy for Life Celebration runs from
10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Community related events:
• The Department of Child and Family Services presents a community information workshop at 5 p.m. Thursday in the library auditorium. The topic includes foster and adoptive parent information
• The Breast Cancer Awareness Fair runs from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Many advances have been made against this dread disease and knowledge of current information could save or extend a life.
'Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies'
In conjunction with yesterday's program featuring Phantom Stallion series author Terri Farley of Reno, a documentary film, "Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies," will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Library auditorium. Set in the Arrowhead Mountains of Montana, the story, produced by Emmy-award winning documentary filmmaker Ginger Kathrens, follows the often perilous life of Cloud, a pure white stallion and his intrepid band of wild horses. Kathrens has chronicled the life of this extraordinary animal since his birth in 1995.
Upcoming activities:
• The newly created Youth Book Club continues its discussion of Kate DiCamillo's award winning novel, "Tale of Despereaux," from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on the next two Saturdays, Oct. 9 and 16. The library has a younger version of the book for readers in the lower elementary grades.
• The Teen Book Club has selected Maggie Stiefvater's "Shiver," the first in the Wolves of Mercy Falls series. According to the author's website, she writes about "werewolves and kissing," and this book involves Grace, who watches the wolves in the woods behind her house, and Sam, who becomes human in the summer and returns to the pack in the winter. If you are intrigued by this story, attend the Book Club meeting from 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14. Return to the library for the Teen Board meeting on Friday, Oct. 15 and become involved in a wide array of events and projects.
• Sandy Foley is vice chairperson for the Library Board of Trustees.
