Two Carson High School seniors Connie Duong and Caitlin Sinclair were awarded for superior performance in writing by the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing Program.

All high schools in the country are invited to participate in this program, and states are allotted winners based upon that state's population.

The NCTE only recognizes four Nevada high school students per year, and CHS has two of the winners for 2009-2010.

Students nominated during their junior year submit a sample of their writing representing their best work, as well as an impromptu response written in front of a proctor.

This prestigious award is very significant in the college and scholarship application process.

Congratulations to Connie and Caitlin, their families, and all their writing instructors from kindergarten through 11th grade!

About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Carson High School is very proud to have four semifinalists: Connie Duong, Sierra Jiron, Emma Kortemeier and Elizabeth Swezey.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test.

The semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student's essay and information about the semifinalist's participation and leadership in school and community activities.

The results of their applications will be sent in February of 2011.
