Barbara Jean (Miller) Hawley

Lifelong Carson City resident, Barbara Jean (Miller) Hawley, passed away in her earthly home and into the presence of God, her eternal home, on Thursday evening, September 30, 2010. Barbara died after living courageously and graciously with a stroke that left her bedridden and significantly disabled in January of 2008. She was born October 10, 1933 and was 76 years old.
Barbara was born to Emma Nevada (Berger) Slade in Los Angeles, California, but moved to Carson City as an infant. Barbara married her high school sweetheart, Joseph Hawley and on July 30 they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. While her children were growing up, Barbara was a stay-at-home mom and did child care out of her home. She later worked for many years as a receptionist for doctors King, Pitts and Thomas (Carson Surgical Group).
Barbara will be remembered as a loving, warm and gracious woman, well-liked and thoughtful of others. Up until the time of her stroke, Barbara was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi, Alpha Master Chapter and attended weekly Bible studies at First Presbyterian Church. Barbara was a member of F.O.E. Auxiliary #1006. She enjoyed her annual treks with Joe to the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, yearly reunion celebrations with her classmates from Carson High School's class of 1951 and especially, spending time with her family - children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Joe Hawley of Carson City, son, Al Hawley (Jill) of Dayton, daughter, LuAnn Hawley of Chiang Mai, Thailand, daughter, Jan Leonard (Peter) of Carson City. She is also survived by her 100 year old mother, Emma Slade, of Carson City, and brother, A. E. "Bud" Miller of Reno. Barbara will long reside in the living memory of her grandchildren - Sharilyn Peterman (Ed), of Carson City, Ben Leonard (Shasta) of Las Vegas, Laura Leonard of Reno, Zachary Hawley and Matthew Hawley of Dayton and great-grandchildren - Brennan Peterman, Hawley Peterman and Emalia Peterman of Carson City.
A celebration of life will take place at 2 pm on Thursday, October 7, First Presbyterian Church of Carson City, 115 N. Division St, with a reception following in the Family Life Center. Capital City Cremation and Burial Society is in charge of arrangements. Donations may be sent in Barbara's memory to Ministry Essentials International, P.O.
