Poll: Prisons, police not a priority

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A statewide poll released Saturday found law enforcement agencies and prison programs are not a funding priority for Nevadans as they face a struggling economy.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal, KLAS-TV and Vegas PBS poll showed 53.3 percent of those surveyed favored raising taxes just enough to maintain existing expenditures in this area.

Twenty-eight percent supported reducing or eliminating funding rather than raising taxes, and only 14.7 percent backed a tax increase to improve law enforcement and prison conditions.

Analysts attribute the results to how Nevada leads the nation in unemployment and foreclosures.

The telephone poll of 600 likely Nevada voters was conducted Sept. 6-16 by Magellan Research. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
