130 YEARS AGO

It is curious to observe in what contempt Col. Fair holds Senator Sharon's sack; it is only equaled by the disgust which fills Sharon when Fairs sack is mentioned. The Appeal sent two reporters to Virginia to find out how each gentleman felt. The reporter for Fair: He (Sharon) proposes to buy the voters of Nevada like so many sheep. He proposes to put his collar on the representatives of Nevada with a mark on their collars "This is my dog." How outrageous! The Sharon reporter found his man in the International Hotel. Sharon: "Isn't it dreadful how a man comes and boldly declares his intention to purchase his way into the United States Senate with twenty dollar pieces!

100 YEARS AGO

Speaking of Key Pittman, Democratic candidate for United States Senate, the Carson City News says he owns no property within the state whatever and his name is on no tax roll. That is not true according to a telegram from D. J. Robb, Sheriff and Assessor of Nye County. Pittman owns property in Nye and Clark County.

70 YEARS AGO

The Carson City Band will play at the Republican rally in the civic auditorium this evening despite earlier claims that the Hatch Act stood in the way of such "political activity" by highway department employees who are members of the band. An attorney for the highway department said that the band can play, as long as it is willing to play for any political party.

50 YEARS AGO

Charles Moran was elected president of the Kit Carson Toastmasters club. Del Armstrong was elected administrative vice president; Everett Randall, educational vice president; Leon Cowan, renamed secretary; and John Ward, sergeant-at-arms.

20 YEARS AGO

By voting for Question 4 on the November ballot, Nevadans may help fence off thousands of abandoned mines that serve as a hazardous curiosity for children.

10 YEARS AGO

About 200 prisoners at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center will participate in Sunday's 2000 Northern Nevada Race for the Cure to benefit the fight against breast cancer.
