Carson City students will be collecting cans of food for the homeless and hungry as part of the annual food drive for Friends and Service Helping. Their goal is to collect one can of food per student each day, today through Nov. 1.
If the students meet the goal, F.I.S.H. will have 100,000 cans. Students from all the public elementary and middle schools in Carson City plus Bethlehem Lutheran, Capital Christian, St Teresa and Eagle Valley Christian will be collecting.
This is the 11th year of the program which will provide 3-4 months of food if the goals are reached. This year, F.I.S.H. will be collecting cans from the schools on a daily basis and posting the top three classrooms from each school on the F.I.S.H website, www.nvfish
.com.
With the economic woes, the lines of F.I.S.H. are long and this program provides food for all in need from Carson City, Douglas, Storey and Lyon Counties. F.I.S.H. is trying to motivate the students by providing prizes:
• The first-place student and a parent will enjoy a 30 minute plane ride from a local airport
• The second-highest student will receive a bike of their choice from Walmart
• The third-place student will receive a $50 gift certificate from Big 5.
• The highest participating class will receive a movie party at the Galaxy Theatre.
• Each school will have an ice cream party for the highest count class.
Donations also can be dropped off food at the Food Bank on Long Street in Carson City or contact the parents of a neighborhood student to have the items picked up.
