The Bureau of Land Management announced Friday it would remove approximately 94 wild horses from the Lahontan Herd Management Area, 35 miles east of Carson City.
The gather is set two days in mid-November or December.
According to the BLM, the gather is necessary to achieve the upper range of the "appropriate management level" of 10 horses in order to maintain ecological balance for the remaining wild horse population, wildlife, permitted livestock and vegetation within the herd management area.
The BLM will use helicopters to gather the wild horses and will transport the animals by motorized vehicles.
According to the BLM, the horses will be offered for adoption through the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program. Unadopted horses will be placed in long-term pastures. The BLM does not sell or send any horses to slaughter.
