Univision won't run ad urging no vote by Hispanics
LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Republican-backed ad campaign urging Hispanics not to vote next month has been yanked by a radio station following a protest led by Nevada Democrats.
Univision told The Associ-ated Press on Tuesday the spot was pulled from its Las Vegas Spanish-language radio station Tuesday shortly after its debut.
Univision also says it will not run a companion ad on its Spanish-language TV broadcasting network and will continue to encourage Hispanics to vote.
The Republican group Latinos for Reform had planned to run the commercials in Nevada, Florida, Cali-fornia, Texas and Colorado.
Founder Robert de Posada says Democrats promised immigration reform to Hispanics to get elected in 2008 then ignored the issue.
De Posada says Hispanics should punish both political parties by sitting out the election.
Ambassador irked at border comment
LAS VEGAS (AP) - Canada's ambassador to the United States wants Republican Sharron Angle to set the record straight after she told Las Vegas high school students that terrorists crossed the northern border to enter the country.
In a letter sent Monday to Angle's campaign, Ambas-sador Gary Doer defended Canada's border security and highlighted the country's ties to Nevada's trade and tourism industries.
Angle singled out the Canadian border while defending her campaign's anti-illegal immigrant ads during a talk to dozens of Hispanic teenagers last week.
She said the ads were not necessarily about Hispanics and stressed that the "northern border is where the terrorists came through."
Angle's ads feature dark-skinned men and mentions of Mexico.
Karl Rove group releases anti-Reid ad
LAS VEGAS (AP) - A shadowy third-party group backed by Republican operative Karl Rove unleashed a new TV spot in Nevada that blames Sen. Harry Reid for the Silver State's stalled economy.
The ad claims Reid has further wounded Nevada's fragile economy with policies that increased the national debt. The narrator singles out the federal health care law and the Wall Street bailout.
Democratic senators back Reid with ad
LAS VEGAS (AP) - A group of U.S. senators that works to elect fellow Democrats has released a TV spot urging Nevadans not to punish Reid for the woeful economy of the Silver State.
The ad that began airing Tuesday warns that Republican Sharron Angle has voiced support for dismantling Social Security and Medicare and suggests voters work out their frustrations in a boxing ring instead. A narrator concludes "voting for Sharron Angle is only going to hurt yourself."
Angle has blamed Reid for Nevada's record unemployment, and her campaign says the ad by the Washington, D.C.-based group doesn't make sense.
Meanwhile, New York Sen. Charles Schumer sent out an e-mail to Democrats urging them to donate to Reid's campaign.
Angle and Reid are locked in a dead-heat race.
