PREP ROUNDUP: Dayton runners take second at ROP

Dayton High's girls cross country team finished second at Thursday's Rite of Passage Invitational.

Katrina Breithaupt took second overall, covering the 5K course in 21 minutes. Shanleigh Brethauer was seventh in 21:55, eclipsing her previous best by more than two minutes. Brenda Cid was 18th in 23:41, Kaia Galloway was 27th in 25:17 and Caitlin Crosby was 28th in 25:33. Isabella Anderson was 34th in 26:54.

On the boys side, Brian Hagedorn finished 15th out of 84 runners. Skyler Rose was 24th in 18:53, Aaron Elisa was 39th in 20:92 and Ben Woods was 74th in 23:36. Peter Scott was 77th in 24:06.

"Shanleigh, Brenda, Caitlin, Brian, Skyler, Aaron and Peter all ran their personal best for the season," said coach Shawn Anderson. "Improvement is what I want to see the most so I am very pleased with how this meet went."

VOLLEYBALL

Douglas tops Manogue in 4

MINDEN - The league-leading Tigers topped Bishop Manogue 25-13, 25-14, 18-25 and 25-17 Thursday night.

Douglas improved to 29-2 overall and 14-0 in league.

Emily Garcia and Brenna White led Douglas with 14 kills apiece. White also had eight digs and a block. Shannon Dugan finished with 13 kills and 13 digs plus three aces. Setter Jackie Harper had four blocks, six digs and 48 assists. Nikki Chavez contributed five digs and Mia Townsell had a team-high 19 digs.

FROSH FOOTBALL

Carson tops Galena

Carson High's freshman football team improved to 7-1 with a 14-6 win over Galena Thursday night at Carson.

The Senators' defense was top-notch. Galena's only score came on a 1-yard run in the first half following an interception return by Galena to the Carson 1.

"Our defense played an incredible game," Carson coach Billy McHenry said. "Nobody stood out. All 11 guys played really well. It was the defense's best game of the year."

Carson took the lead for good on its first drive of the second half when Joey Thurman scored on a 5-yard run. Thurman led Carson with 60 yards rushing.

Carson scored again midway through the fourth quarter when Garrett Schaffer threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Kyle Denning on a fourth-and-goal play.

Carson returns to action next Wednesday at Reno.

SOCCER

Whittell edges Dayton

DAYTON - Marlo Smith scored the game's only goal on a 20-yard free kick in the first half, and the Warriors made it stand up for a 1-0 win in a Northern 3A girls soccer match Thursday afternoon.

Whittell outshot Dayton 7-5.

"We had a couple of good runs; crosses, but we couldn't finish them off," Dayton coach Jared Miklich said. "I was happy with the way everybody played."

Dayton dropped to 2-8 with two regular-season games left. Dayton finishes on the road at North Tahoe (Tuesday) and Truckee (Thursday). Both matches start at 2 p.m.

Dayton boys lose 4-1

DAYTON - Leo Rodriguez scored Dayton's only goal in a Northern 3A loss to Whittell on Senior Night.

Whittell led 3-0 before Rodriguez was able to score. Whittell's final goal came when a Dayton defender accidentally deflected the ball past his own goalie.

Coach Karl Watts praised the play of Adan Gomez and Rodriguez.

Dayton plays at North Tahoe at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
