On Oct. 27, the Nevada Appeal published a letter from the rather new Carson Nugget President Steve Neighbors, apparently in response to Guy W. Farmer's Sunday column.
In his letter, Mr. Neighbors caustically remarks on the opinions given by myself and others that were included in Mr. Farmer's column. As most know, when asked my opinion, I will and always have given an honest and straight-forward answer.
My comment was, "In all my years in Carson City, I cannot remember a more divisive or controversial project. If and when it's all sorted out, it should go to the ballot box, at least as an advisory vote. Anything less would be an insult to the taxpayers of this fine community." That is my opinion, and I stand by my words.
Mr. Neighbors insinuates that perhaps I should have checked with him before making any comment on the downtown project. I do not, nor does any citizen of Carson City, have to check with him, his developers or his attorneys prior to commenting on the project, or anything else for that matter.
As a resident of 45 years and a man who served as mayor for three terms, I can confidently say that Carson City residents are more than capable of doing their own homework and making informed decisions. Mr. Neighbors, it is you who must satisfy the questions and concerns of the people of this community - and not with righteous indignation.
Mr. Neighbors asks, "May I ask what the real motive is behind all of your cooperative efforts?" Yes, you may. My real motive is doing what is best for the residents of this community, as we will still be here long after you and your associates are gone. My question to you is, "Why are you afraid to let the people of this community decide on the merits of the project for themselves?"
