Though Literacy for Life culminated with a joyous celebration a few weeks ago, the aspirations and goals of this outstanding endeavor will enhance the community for months to come. Soon, every student in the Carson City School District will receive a library card and hopefully will visit the library to check out a variety of materials. Listed below are book recommendations for readers of all ages and books for parents and grandparents to read to younger children.

Books to read

"All of Baby, Nose to Toes" by Victoria Adler and "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb" by Al Perkins use bright pictures, catchy rhythm and rhyming to encourage a sense of discovery for babies, while "Hello Baby!" By Mem Fox depicts beautiful baby animals who are clever and funny and the most precious creature of all, the baby. "I Love You the Purplest" by Barbara Joose provides delightful ways to express the unique qualities of each child in a family and is a soothing bedtime read for those in preschool and lower elementary grades.

Not so soothing and not for younger readers, "The Big Short" by Michael Lewis goes a long way toward unraveling the financial meltdown that still threatens the state and the economy. Lewis also wrote "The Blind Side."

Things to do

Saturday, Nov. 6 provides a bonanza of good times at the library. Youth Services Librarian Amber Sady has scheduled two programs, which promise to attract readers and movie buffs alike. From 10:30 a.m. to noon, the movie "The Tale of Despereaux" will culminate the four-week reading and discussion of the novel. Popcorn and lemonade will be provided and the event is open to everyone.

Love on a Leash runs from 1-2 p.m. Children can read to one of the visiting therapy dogs and take home a new paperback book. From 2-4 p.m. participants can play Carsonopoly, a board game similar to Monopoly, but using Carson City businesses and landmarks. New residents to the community will find this game an interesting and unique way to learn facts about our town and locals will probably uncover some hidden gems to visit.

The Friends of the Library are making library patrons thankful for the opportunity to buy current and classic books for prices that benefit pocketbooks. The Holiday Book Sale takes place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12 and 13, at the library. For those who like to do some early Christmas shopping, books are always an option. Why not include a library card with the new logo, created by the Teen Art Club?
