The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
Silver dollar: To Nevada Day Inc.'s new president, Ken Hamilton, and all those who worked so hard to pull off another outstanding celebration of Nevada's statehood. Thank you to all the pancake flippers, chili stirrers, beard growers, rock drillers, parade marchers, carnival workers, band parents, balloon flyers, tour guides, pow wow dancers, bartenders, food servers, and those who sweep up after the equestrians. Plus everyone else who puts so much effort into making this the best statehood celebration in the country, bar none. Please know that all your hard work is appreciated by the thousands of us whose only effort is to sit back and enjoy the view, eat too much and maybe raise a few glasses to Nevada. Rest well today, and remember, only 364 more days until Nevada Day 2011.
Silver dollar: To Carson City Sheriff's K9 Ary, and all the other four-legged officers working the mean streets. Ary pulled a convicted sex offender wanted on parole violations out of his hiding place last week, inflicting some superficial bites in the process. The suspect was in a crawlspace that would have been exceptionally dangerous for a human officer to enter. Good dog, Ary.
Silver dollar: To Carson City being ranked one of the top places to retire by SmartMoney magazine. Positive attention like this is a selling point for attracting not only retirees but new businesses looking to relocate in areas with great quality of life.
Silver dollar: To the fact that there's only two days left until Election Day. Thanks to those who voted early. To the rest, see you at the polls.
