RENO - Jonathan Guevara scored in the game's second minute, and Carson held off Reno for a season-opening 1-0 win in the Northern 4A opener for both schools Wednesday night at Foster Field.
Carson returns to action Wednesday at Reed for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
The score came off a throw-in by Jaime Lopez.
"We definitely had our opportunities," first-year coach Eric Masters said. "We had more in the second half. On two occasions, Jason Martinez beat a defender and the keeper had to make good saves.
"Marco (Magallon) played well in goal. Zach Smith and Carlos Munoz played well defensively."
Magallon had to make two key stops, one in the 7th minute and another on a penalty kick from about 22 yards moments before the final whistle.
REED TOPS DOUGLAS
MINDEN - The Douglas boys' soccer team suffered a setback against cross-league rival Reed, losing 3-2.
Douglas, which upset Reed in the first round of the regional playoffs last season, matched the Raiders well early on and even held the edge in time of possession before the Raiders scored a breakaway goal in the 34th minute for the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers answered less than two minutes later when junior Daniel Calderon cracked a shot from the right side to the far post on the ground.
Reed took the lead for good on a sharp shot from the right in the 44th minute.
Reed added a goal in the 67th minute to get needed distance as Douglas's Alex Torres answered with a goal in the 76th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Francisco Sanchez had a big game, coming up with a number of big saves down the stretch.
"He kept us in the game," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. "This was his best game so far. He'll have up days and have down days and that's just part of the growing process."

FERNLEY EDGES DAYTON
Fernley jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead and then had to withstand a furious rally by Dayton to escape with a 3-2 win in the Northern 3A opener for both schools.
Dayton is 0-1 in conference and 2-3 overall. The Dust Devils host Sparks at 3 p.m. today.
Maribel Ledezma scored both of Dayton's goals, the second coming in the 70th minute to slice Fernley's lead to 3-2.
Dayton had a chance to tie the match in the closing minutes, but a shot by Ledezma was wide right by about a foot, according to coach Jared Miklich.
"The first half we were having problems," Miklich said. "We weren't playing up to our potential. We talked about it at half.
"I thought we played really great in the second half. I think we controlled the whole second half. We were able to put a lot of good runs together."
Magdalena Landa played well defensively for Dayton. She played stopper the second half, and that helped Dayton keep the ball in Fernley's half of the field in the final 40 minutes.
