Discussion group on faith and modern times

A discussion group on "Contending for the Faith in the 21st Century" will be led by Dr. Adam Francisco, assistant professor of historical theology at Concordia Seminary in Ft. Wayne, Ind., from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Carson City.

The conversation will center on how to share and defend faith in the modern world. Francisco will help walk participants through the reasons why faith should be shared and how to defend it an increasingly unbelieving world. All faiths are welcome to join the discussion.

Those interested in attending can RSVP at 882-5252. The church is located at 1837 Mountain St. and lunch is provided. The event is free, but donations are appreciated.

TMCC Reno offering class on Gandhi

Because of renewed interest in peace icon Mahatma Gandhi and his ideas, Truckee Meadows Community College of Reno is offering a course on "The Life, Experiments and Philosophy of Gandhi."

Teaching the class is religious statesman Rajan Zed.

"The Life, Experiments and Philosophy of Gandhi" (CR130C) will be offered from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Room S103, TMCC Meadowood Center, 5270 Neil Road, Reno. Tuition is $39 and seniors get a discount.

Temple to celebrate Jewish High Holy Days

Temple Bat Yam, which serves residents of Lake Tahoe's South Shore, Carson City, Dayton and Carson Valley, is inviting interested residents and visitors to join in observing the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) and the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) Wednesday through Sept. 18.

Considered the most important period of the Jewish year, the temple will observe 12 services and events on five days at four locations during the 10-day High Holy Days period. Four services are designed for families with children.

All services and events are open to any interested area resident or guest. Non-member attendees are encouraged to make a donation to the temple to help defray its costs.

Rabbi Jonathan Freirich will lead services assisted by Canto Jim Heilborn, of Lincoln, Calif.

Temple Bat Yam is located at 3260 Pioneer Trail, in South Lake Tahoe.
