GARDNERVILLE - Carson High kicked off its 2010 cross country season with an impressive showing at the Douglas High Class Races at Lampe Park Friday afternoon.
The Senators, the defending boys and girls state champions, had three individual winners in the opening meet. It gives the Senators some good momentum heading into next Friday's Reed Invitational.
"Overall, both the boys and girls were competitive," Carson coach Pete Sinnott said. "We're pretty close to where we should be. They (the runners) have a good vision of where they want to go. If they pace themselves they will be pretty competitive by the end of the year."
Logan Phillipi won the senior boys race in 14:30 for the 2.5-mile course. April Shonnard won the junior girls race in 16:10 and Alex Drozdoff won the freshmen girls race in 17:31.
Brandon Buonacorsi placed third in the senior boys race while Evan Richards placed fourth at 15:15. Amanda Gordon and Ashley Salcedo ran 18:27 and 18:45, respectively for the senior girls.
Shonnard's time was the second-fastest overall for the girls, according to Sinnott. Erika Sosa ran an 18:05 while Chelsea Gordon ran an 18:57. Rhett Petrenko ran 18:24 for the junior boys.
Nick Green and Taylor Bradshaw were an impressive 1-2 in the sophomore boys race, clocking 14:50 and 15:09, respectively. Chris Mariner was timed in 16:49. Mallory Wilson and Alex Theiss led the sophomore girls with times of 19:36 and 19:58.
"Nick cut two minutes off his time from last year," Sinnott said. "Taylor is going to be good. He's barely starting right now, and he looked real relaxed."
Cindy Juchtzer was second to Drozdoff in the frosh girls race, clocking a 17:59. Dominic Kinder was fifth in the frosh boys race with a time of 15:53 while Tony Xie was 10th in 17:54.
"Both of them (Drozdoff and Juchtzer) ran well," Sinnott said. "They paced themselves very well."
DAYTON GETS TWO TOP-10s
A short-handed Dust Devil squad fared well at the Douglas meet.
Coach Shawn Anderson brought just nine of 16 runners. Two runners, both of whom are home schooled were on vacation, one runner was injured and another that came over from Virginia City has yet to be cleared for competition by the NIAA.
Freshman Rhael Ransom finished sixth in 19:41, while Shanleigh Brethauer ran 19:08 to finish sixth in the senior girls race.
"I was pretty impressed with her (Brethauer)," Anderson said. "It was her first cross country meet ever. She went all out. She didn't have anything left at the end."
Skyler Rose finished 13th in the boys sophomore race (16:08), while Aaron Elissa was 11th among the frosh boys. Isabella Anderson was 15th among freshmen girls, clocking a 22:20. Senior Brenda Cid ran a 21:33.
"I gave them goals, and times I wanted them to run," Anderson said. "They weren't too far off."
