A Fernley man, jailed in Washoe County for allegedly possessing child pornography, committed suicide by hanging, an official said Friday.

According to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Ivan Lynn Bennett, 63, was arrested by federal agents on Aug. 27.

Around 8 p.m. Aug. 29, deputies conducting a routine security check of the special unit where Bennett was housed discovered he hanged himself by using a piece of his bed sheet.

Jail staff and paramedics attempted to revive Bennett. He was taken from the jail by REMSA but was pronounced dead at Renown Regional Medical Center.
