WINNEMUCCA - After starting Saturday with a tough three-set loss, Dayton High's volleyball team stormed back to win six straight matches to win the Lowry Invitational.
Dayton beat Centennial of Idaho 23-25, 25-22 and 17-15 in the championship match.
"I can't even tell you how amazing this team was," Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. "They played so hard and didn't give up. We had to play five straight without a break. We have so many strengths at different spots. It was totally a team effort."
Dayton went 8-1 for the tournament and is 14-2 for the season.
Dayton opened the tournament on Friday with straight-set victories over Battle Mountain and Elko.
That set the stage for the first of three showdowns with Capital. The teams split the first two games and then Capital won the deciding game 15-13.
Dayton ripped off wins over Lowry (25-16, 25-19), Lovelock (25-21, 25-23) and Fernley (25-20, 21-25, 15-7) to earn a rematch with Capitol. Dayton won 25-20 and 25-21 to advance to the finals against undefeated Centennial.
Dayton had to beat Centennial twice to win the title.
Dayton won the first 25-23 and 25-21 to advance to the title match.
MacKenzie Kielty was named to the all-tournament team. Kathie Arias and Madison Foley also earned praise from their coach.
CARSON POSTS 3-2 MARK
After dropping all three of its matches on Friday, the Carson High volleyball team played better on Saturday at the High Sierra Invitational in Reno.
The Senators went 3-2 on Saturday to finish 3-8 for the weekend.
Carson started Saturday with wins over Foothill (25-16, 25-18) and Galena (23-25, 25-23, 15-11). Carson ran into a tough Enterprise team and dropped a 27-29 and 23-25 decision.
Carson bounced back with a 25-17 and 25-20 win over Oakdale before being eliminated by Shasta 23-25 and 20-25.
"By the end of the day, we ran out of steam," Carson coach Justin Malley said. "We were much more competitive. We played more relaxed."
The Senators also played again without Elysse Virden, who has a sprained ankle.
Malley said Virden is day-to-day. Carson opens 4A play Tuesday at Reno at 6 p.m.
Jeanette Van Sickle led the team in kills on Saturday with 40, while Bailey Valente added 25.
Angela Augusta had 40 digs and Jazmyn Stokes had 37. Van Sickle led the way in blocks with 13 while Micaela Vowinkel added five.
Valente and Van Sickle led the servers with nine and seven aces, respectively. Valente was the assist leader with 55, while Courtney Hack added 40 and ElizabethBennet-Doran had 20.
