The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.

Wooden Nickel: Our hearts go out to the family of Peggy Herlacher, strangled in her home in Silver Springs. Police say her grandson, the only suspect, is a heroin addict. A glance at the sheriff's log any day of the week shows that drugs are the biggest cause of crime in our community, a scourge that crosses all ages, incomes and races. While the nation grows ever more distracted by political posturing and manufactured controversies, this worm is eating away at our insides. Time to get serious about what really matters.

Silver Dollar: To the Northern Nevada DUI Task Force, for a donation of breathalyzers to the Dayton substation of the Lyon County Sheriff's Office. Officers should have all the tools they need to fight drunk driving at their

fingertips. This donation is a much-

needed asset in the never-ending fight to keep our roads and communities safer.

Silver Dollar: To the amazing Danielle Balderson of Carson City, who won 15 awards at the state fair in equestrian events. This young rider is showing the stuff that it takes to overcome any hurdles in life.

Silver Dollar: To the fact that in 60 days, the election will be over and we won't have to watch any more of those nasty campaign ads on TV.

Silver Dollar: And finally, let's raise a cold one to three-day weekends. May there be no labor on your Labor Day weekend, only fun, food and family. Stay safe.
