Carson City motorists will have easier access to the community center, library and aquatic center with the reopening of Roop Street.
"Our goal is to have the south portion open within the next couple of weeks," said Carson City Engineer Jeff Sharp.
Roop Street between East William and Robinson has been closed for most of the summer, but all that remains to be done are some finishing touches including sidewalks and landscaping, Sharp said.
Navigating around the east side of Carson City has been challenging to motorists this year since Roop Street closed in January.
Work on Roop Street north from William to Beverly Drive will continue through the end of the year.
When the project is complete, Roop will have two through lanes in each direction, upgraded utilities, enhanced bicycle and pedestrian accommodations and improved public transit stops.
Sharp said the work has been tedious due to the relocation of a number of utilities including water lines, storm drainage, telephone, cable, gas, electric, etc. Each entity has had to do its projects independently of other crews being in the work area to preserve safety and quality.
Meanwhile, a section of East William Street will be closed for 20 hours starting Sunday from 12 a.m. until 8 p.m. Alternate routes are suggested.
A small section between the community center and the Bank of America will be prepared for traffic, Sharp said.
Crews will grind the top layer of the existing asphalt and apply a new overlay and temporary striping, he said. The new asphalt will go through several different rollers to ensure that the road will be ready to take traffic Sunday night.
Sharp also said residents should be aware that Highway 50 East from Carson Street to the freeway at Gold Dust West was turned over to the city in July so it is now officially known as William Street.
