Museum training features 'Project Archaeology'

A vivid mosaic of programming awaits new and existing volunteers at the Nevada State Museum's Fall Tour Guide Training, which starts today.

"Speakers as colorful and diverse as the autumn landscape present an array of topics representing the archaeology of shelters and dwellings throughout Nevada history. Outstanding scholars incite curiosity and invite exploration through lectures, slide shows and presentations," said Deborah Stevenson, curator of education for the museum.

All current and new tour guide volunteers are encouraged to attend the free, four-day training session.

Training features two Native American Master Artists with the programs Traditional Paiute Arts by Marlin Thompson and Tule Ducks by Mike Williams.

Emblem Club hosts rummage sale

The Emblem Club is hosting a rummage sale with all proceeds to go to a scholarship for a single mom getting a nursing degree at Western Nevada College.

The sale will start with a preview and chili feed at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Elks lodge on Nevada Street.

Moellendorf to speak at NARFE meeting

The next luncheon meeting of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees will be Tuesday at Grandma Hattie's restaurant, 2811 S. Carson St.

The business meeting starts at noon with the speaker at 12:05 p.m. Roger Moellendorf, director of Carson City Parks and Recreation Department will speak on the effects of budget cuts and programs still available to seniors.

Cindy Reid to speak at barbecue

Cindy Reid, wife of gubernatorial candidate Rory Reid is scheduled to speak at the annual Carson City Democratic Women's Club Candidates BBQ from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at 1001 Arrowhead Dr.

Also addressing the gathering will be Mayor Bob Crowell, former congressional candidate Jill Derby and some 20 other candidates for state and local elections.

Entertainment will be provided by the "Notables." Cost is $20, or $10 for children 12 and younger.

Support wild horses, burros at fundraiser

The Wild Horse Preservation League of Dayton is hosting a "Run Wild - Run Free fundraiser" from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the MacKay Mansion, 291 S. D St. in Virginia City.

There will be food, and live music will be provided by the Red Rose Band of Silver City. In addition, there will be an American Indian Drum Circle presented by Dr. Dave Kemppainen, a counseling psychologist who uses his handmade, decorated drums and other instruments to help and heal.

This non-profit organization is dedicated to preserving wild horses and burros, and works closely with other wild horse advocacy groups across the country.

CTRH Auxiliary sponsors Tupperware fundraiser

Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary is holding a two-day Tupperware Sale from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today and Thursday in the main lobby of the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.

Shoppers are invited to come in and check out the traditional and latest styles of Tupperware and receive a gift with each purchase. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to support the CTRH Auxiliary projects.

St. Peter's provides caregiver resources

The members of the the Caregivers Support Group at St. Peter's Episcopal Church offer a small group meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday in St. Peter's Rectory south of the church at 312 N. Division St. Also, a new caregiver resource binder is being updated to look up current resources for free or meet with an individual to talk with if you do not feel comfortable meeting in a group.

The workshop will be helpful if you are a caregiver to a seriously ill parent, spouse or loved one, you may need specific names of local doctors and names of reputable residential care centers for the older or disabled adult.

There are people who will help caregivers get that well-deserved night off to go to the movies or do some shopping.

Used book sale at Douglas library

The Douglas County Public Library is hosting a used book sale in the lobby of the Minden branch during regular library hours.

DVDs, VHS tapes, audio books and paperback books will be on sale from Sept. 25 through Oct. 2. Paperbacks will be 50 cents or $1 each; other items will be priced as marked.

Tumbleweeds on the road again

The Silver State Tumbleweeds is a travel group hosted by Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club of Douglas County. They are back from hiatus and will be on the go in October.

Seniors are invited to join the Tumbleweeds for a four-day, three-night motor coach tour to Laughlin departing Gardnerville on Oct. 26. Participants will stay at the Riverside Resort Casino located right on the Colorado River.

This getaway is $230 per person double occupancy, and Includes hotel, motor coach transportation, luggage handling, one breakfast and one dinner buffet. There is an optional day trip to Oatman, Ariz., offered at an additional charge. Single occupancy is just $35 more.

This trip is open to anyone age 21 or older. Spaces are limited. All reservations must be confirmed on or before Sept. 28.

Murder mystery fundraiser planned

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St., will present "Murder on the Princess Royal."

This murder mystery dinner will include a delicious meal and a murder that the audience is encouraged to solve. There will be silent and live auction items and many surprises. Participants can have their cruise ship picture taken with Captain (and Mayor) Bob Crowell, and enjoy all the luxuries of sailing on a 1920s-era cruise ship.

The cruise sets sail Oct. 2 with cocktails starting at 5 p.m. Admission is $35 per person, $40 for seating with the captain, and $250 for a table of eight.

Participants are welcome to show up in 1920s apparel and help solve the who-done-it.
