A hearing is today in East Fork Justice Court for a 21-year-old Carson City man who was wearing the $70 tennis shoes he was accused of stealing moments before when deputies caught him at the Fuji Park fish pond.
John Lampe was jailed on $25,500 bail Tuesday on suspicion of burglary after the shoes were reported stolen from Famous Footwear at Carson Valley Plaza in north Douglas County.
According to reports, deputies were called to the store at 2:15 p.m. after the suspect walked out wearing DC shoes and was seen making his getaway on a skateboard.
Employees identified the alleged thief as Lampe. He reportedly left the worn-out shoes he wore into the store in the box from which he took the new pair.
Lampe was spotted heading into Fuji Park on his skateboard where a deputy caught up with him at the fish pond.
He was wearing white and gray tennis shoes that matched the pair reported missing from the store. Lampe told the officer he'd purchased the shoes a few days earlier and had a receipt at home.
When Lampe was booked at Douglas County Jail, the new shoes were taken as evidence and his old shoes were returned to him.
