PREP ROUNDUP: Carson boys, girls boot North Valleys

RENO - Carson High scored twice in the first 26 minutes en route to 3-0 win over North Valley in a Northern 4A boys soccer match Saturday afternoon.

Carson is a perfect 5-0 entering Tuesday's game at Wooster.

"We started off well again," Carson coach Eric Masters said. "Obviously Sam (Hutchinson) is playing very well. Marco (Magallon, goalie) had some really good saves."

Magallon's goal kick got the Senators their first game. Jason Martinez corraled the kick and passed to Hutchinson, who beat the North Valleys keeper in the 22nd minute.

Four minutes later, jaime Lopez and Hutchinson were credited with assists on a goal by Martinez.

"We had some chances (the rest of the half)," Masters said. "Their goalie made a couple of good saves."

Chris Espinoza compoleted the scoring when he passed to Gustavo Gonzalez, who found the back of the net.

Mike Samii and Carlos Munoz were praised for their defensive play by Masters.

CARSON GIRLS ROUT N.V.

RENO - Kenzie Tillitt scored five goals and added an assist to lead the Senators to an easy 9-0 win over the Panthers Saturday afternoon.

Kiahna Pimentel, Alexandra Schlager, Arran Rumbaugh and Eliza Matley added a goal apiece. Brianna McCord added two assists.

This one was over early, as Carson scored three times in the first 10 minutes. Carson outshot North Valleys 23-5.

Kate Schulz and Natalie Stevens led the Senators' defensive effort.

Carson plays at Wooster at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

DOUGLAS GIRLS ROLL

Tia Lyons and Holly Downer scored two goals apiece, and Sierra Bertelone-Smith and Katie Dry added one each to lead the Tigers to a 6-1 win over McQuen Saturday afternoon.

"The team is commended for a fast start and a chin up recovery from the Carson game on Tuesday," Douglas coach Lorraine Fitzhugh saud. "We made good progress on our goals for offensive movement.

"Tia has played every minute of the last two games with determination and soccer savvy. Holly has been asked to take on a dual role playing both central defender and forward, and met it in spades. Brianna Randall has proven to be an offensive threat while Courtney McKimmey handles the goalkeeping position with confident competence."

Douglas led 2-0 at the half on goals by Dry and Smith in the 3rd and 30th minute, respectively. Downer and Lyons each scored twice in the final 40 minutes to complete the barrage.

VOLLEYBALL

DAYTON POUNDS LOWRY

WINNEMUCCA -Madison Foley had 10 kills and four digs to lead Dayton High's volleyball squad to a an easy 25-9, 25-9 and 25-21 win over the Buckaroos Saturday afternoon.

Dayton improved to 4-0 in Northern 3A play and 18-2 overall heading into a showdown Tuesday night against visiting Truckee.

"We got sloppy in the third game," Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. "I put my bench in the second game and then I went back to the starters in the third game. It was weird."

McKenzie Kiely had 26 assists, three aces and three digs, while Kathie Aroas finsihed with five digs.

The Dayton JV squad lost 23-25 and 21-25 to fall to 1-3. Taryn Schlacta had seven digs and Kelsie Torres three kils for the Dust Devils.

The Dayton frshman squad improved to 3-1 with a 29-31, 25-22 and 15-9 victory. Lettie Lynch and Shannon Waski lead dayton with seven and five kills, respectively.

MUCKERS TOP GERLACH TWICE

VIRGINIA CITY - Virginia City easily defeated Gerlach twice in a Northern 1A match on Saturday.

In the opening match, VC beat Gerlach 25-7 and 25-10. In the second match, V.C. won 25-8 and 25-9.

Virginia City is 4-7 overall and 3-2 in league.

Jill Dupre led the Muckers in the first match with five kills and an ace, while Jamie Poston and Taylor Parsons added three kills apiece. parsons also had six aces. Denali Fickus had 10 asists and five aces.

In the second match, Dupre had four kills and two aces, while Parsons served up seven aces.

CROSS COUNTRY

CARSON GIRLS 2ND

GRASS VALLEY - Carson High's girls' squad took second to Granite Bay at Saturday at the Nevada Union Invitational.

The varsity boys were seventh, while the JVboys and girls were fifth and six-place, respectively.

"We (the girls) ran two minutes faster a team this year," coach Pete Sinnott said. "Everybody ran real strong."

April Shonnard led the way with a ninth-place finish (20.19), while Alex Drozdoff ran a 20:34 to finish 11th. Cindy Juchtzer was 22nd in 21:53, Amanda Gordon was 24th in 21:56 and Ashley Salcedo was 31st in 22:15.

The boys team was minus Taylor Bradshaw, who was away with his family.

Logan Philippi was 18th in 17:43, while Brent Moyle was 27th in 18:20. Nick Greene was 33rd in 18:30, Brandon Buonacorsi was 36th in 18:35 and Evan Richards was 37th in 18:44.

Dominic Kinder was 14th in the JV boys race, clocking a 20:18. Chris Merriner was 17th in 20:23 with Joe Ward taking 31st in 21:14. Craig Smith was 50th in 21:51 and Tony Xie was 52nd in 21:52.

Alex Theiss was 11th in 24:14 to lead the JV girls to a sixth-place finish. Avery Hudak was 18th in 25:11 and Haley Toups was 40th in 27:10.

Quarterback Matt Nolan rushed for two scores and passed for another to lead the Senators to an easy win Friday.

Carson's defense forced five fumbles.
