A Yerington motorcyclist was killed Monday afternoon after a dump truck failed to stop at a sign, according the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Michael R. Leonard, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene about 4:45 p.m. Monday on Highway 95 Alternate near Penrose Lane, nine miles north of Yerington.

According to Trooper Chuck Allen, a white dump truck, driven by Douglas J. Sconce, 28, of Fallon, was west on Penrose Lane when Sconce failed to stop at the stop sign to Highway 95 Alternate.

Leonard, on a 1986 Kawasaki motorcycle, was northbound on the highway and was unable to avoid the dump truck as it crossed into his path, said Allen.

The motorcycle deflected off the truck, causing Leonard to be thrown from his bike.  The motorcycle skidded across the intersection coming to rest on the west roadway edge.

Scronce did not sustain any injuries.

According to Allen, due to the fact that a commercial motor vehicle was involved, a complete safety and mechanical inspection will be completed on the dump truck, as well as a close look at the qualifications of the driver, by one of our personnel assigned to the commercial motor vehicle enforcement section.

Information on whether or not Sconce was cited was not immediately available.

The accident investigation is continuing and witnesses or anyone with additional information is encouraged to call Trooper Mike Osterman at the NHP Fernley substation office at (775) 575-5518 or the Department of Public Safety-Communications Center at (775) 687-0400 regarding case # 1009201220.
