RENO - Carson High's volleyball team extended is winning streak to two with a 25-10, 25-10, 18-25 and 25-18 win over Wooster on Thursday night.
The Senators, who played without coach Justin Malley and setter Bailey Valente (back injury), improved to 4-2 in league. Robert Maw replaced Malley on the Carson sideline.
"The first two games we played really well," Maw said. "Things were clicking. Jeanette (Van Sickle) was having fun pounding away. The third game we went to the younger girls and we had some ball control errors which could be expected. The fourth game we put the starters back in."
Van Sickle had seven kills and three aces. Sarah Lushina finished with five kills, seven digs and five aces. Krista McGahuey and Elysse Virden finished with five kills apiece, while Alyson Christl and Kristalei Wolfe had five digs.
Courtney Hack finished with 23 assists, while Elizabeth Bennett-Doran had 11.
Both the Carson freshman and JV teams won in two games.
YERINGTON WINS AGAIN
The Lions improved to 20-1 with a 25-12, 25-9, 18-25 and 25-5 win over North Tahoe. The Lions are now 3-0 in 2A play.
Brooke Aiazzi led the Lions with 11 kills and 16 digs, while Alex Roberts added 10 kills and four blocks. Maddie Hull-Taylor served four aces and Kelsey Soukop added three aces.
DOUGLAS OUTLASTS MANOGUE
The league-leading Tigers outlasted Bishop Manogue 25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 25-16 and 15-10.
Shannon Dugan led the Tigers with 24 kills, two blocks and 12 digs. Jackie Harper finished with 52 assists and 10 digs. Emily Garcia contributed 10 kills, three digs and four blocks. Brenna White added eight kills, 17 digs and three assists. Mia Townsell led the team in digs with 25.
Douglas is 15-1 overall and 6-0 in league.
TENNIS
CARSON SQUADS ROLL
The Carson boys and girls tennis squads posted easy wins over Damonte Ranch on Thursday.
The girls won 12-6, while the boys won 13-5.
Emily Collins went 3-0 in singles, dropping just five games. Ashley Saarem won both of her sets, 6-2 and 6-3. Emma Kortemeier also went 2-0, winning 6-2 and 6-1. In doubles, Mary Analiza Ong and Katherine Breeding went 2-1, winning 6-4 and 6-2. Ellise McGowan and Camilla Dudley won their only appearance, 7-6. Hannah Novak and Abigail Hersey also went 1-0 with a 6-3 win. Ashleigh Potter and Jessica Fleming went 1-1.
"Dudley and McGowan gave us a lead in the second round," said Carson coach Diane Baker-Roberts, whose team improved to 6-1 in league. "I didn't play Potter and Fleming right away because I wanted to give some other girls a chance to play."
The Carson girls are hosting a car wash today from 1 to 6 p.m. in the North Save Mart parking lot. The cost is $5.
On the boys' side, Adam Whitt went 3-0 in singles to spark the Senators to an easy victory. He lost just four games in three sets.
J.J. Aragon and Ben Drozdoff went 2-0 in doubles, winning 6-1 and 6-4. Connor Fallon and Jacob Trapp also went 2-0 , winning 6-3 and 6-2.
Mathew Boggs and Casey Reid went 1-1, while Peter Brinson went 1-2 in singles. Spenser Hollenbeck-Pringle won his only singles set 6-4. Cory Gentner and Chris Fernandez won 7-6 (6-4 tiebreak) in their only doubles set. Sean Cutunilli and Ian McBryde won their only doubles set 6-1.
FOOTBALL
CARSON FRESHMAN IMPROVE TO 4-0
The Senators improved to 4-0 with a wild 52-41 win over Bishop Manogue Thursday night at Carson.
The game was tied at 14, 21 and 35-all. Late interceptions by Cody Cunningham and Andrew Gutierrez helped stave off the Miners.
"The whole offensive line played great," Carson coach Billy McHenry said. "We had over 500 yards. Our defense had some pretty big plays."
Joey Thurman ran for 140 yards and two scores plus a 2-point conversion. Austin Shaffer ran for 100 yards and four scores, all of which were inside of 5 yards. He also completed a pass for 30 yards.
Garrett Schafer threw for 250 yards, 180 of those yards going to T.J. Thomsen, who also had a touchdown.
