COMMUNITY SPORTS: Jr. Midgets blank North Tahoe

Carson City's Jr. Midget Pop Warner team recorded its second shutout of the season, blanking North Tahoe 28-0 over the weekend.

Josiah Pongasi had an interception and ran 35 yards for a touchdown in the opening quarter.

Carson's offense came together in the second quarter when Pongasi threw a pass to Nolan Shine for a 55-yard touchdown. Pongasi was able to break away for a 20-yard touchdown with Corey Reid kicking the extra point.

In the third quarter, Brady O'Keefe had a 20-yard touchdown run. Pongasi had a 35-yard touchdown run with Reid kicking the extra point in the fourth quarter. Caleb Ball had a 25-yard carry and Austin Lowe had a 15-yard carry late in the fourth.

Shine recovered an onside kick by North Lake Tahoe.

The Jr. Midget team will face Reno Wolfpack on Oct. 2 at Governors Field at 11 a.m.

In other Pop Warner action:

•The Carson Senators Mitey Mites football team grabbed a 12-6 win over the Reno Wolf Pack White squad.

Carson's defense started the game with a goalline stand, and two plays later Sean Sear scored on a 75-yard run.

After another hold by the Carson defense, Colton Schafer scored on a 65-yard run to make it 12-0.

The Carson defense was led by Sasha Keith-Handschuh, Dylan Roide, Jordan Torres, Devin Presley, Garrett Tibma and Bradley Maffei.

On offense, Kevin Martinez, Gabriel Tatro, Khayman Garland and Calvin Milby were some of the linemen who played well.

The 2-1 Senators travel to Reno for their next contest. They will play the Sparks Cardinals at Mira Loma Park on Friday at 6 p.m.

• The Jr PeeWee Blue squad staged a great comeback in Reno over the weekend at Mira Loma Park, wiping out a 6-0 halftime deficit to win 13-12.

The team never gave up and secured a tough victory through great, hard-nosed defense.

Two tied for lead

at Genoa Lakes

GENOA - Greg Bruckner of Phoenix, Ariz. and Glen Stubblefield from Spring Creek Golf & Country Club each shot 65 to take the first-day lead at the Northern California Section PGA tournament at Genoa Lakes.

Five players are three strokes back at 68 and three more are at 69, four shots back.

The tournament, which is being sponsored by the Carson Valley Inn, concluded Tuesday.

Mott, Nitzberg win

at Carson Valley

Sean Mott and Gary Nitzberg won their respective flights at Silver Oak Men's Club Master of Masters tournament on Sept. 19.

Mott won Flight A with a net 72, while Chang Suh, John Owens and Marc Garcia tied for second with 74s. Nitzberg won Flight B with a net 69, while Dennis Golt was second with a 76 and Frank Maricich was third with a 77. Dennis Prutch was fourth with a 78.

Green wins low net

at Silver Oak

Dick Green carded a net 60 to take the first-round lead at the Silver Oak Senior Men's Club tournament on Sept. 22.

John Scoville and Terry Thomas tied for second with 66s and Tom Rackerby with fourth with a 67.

Silva triumphs at

Eagle Valley

Georgia Silva was the low gross winner in the first flight of the Eagle Valley Women's Golf Club Tee to Green tournament on Sept. 22.

Silva had a 49.0 to win the first flight for players with a 0-26 handicap. Dee Murray and Angie Scrivner tied for first place low net in the first flight. They finished with a 47.0.

Marti Veverka won low gross for the second flight (handicaps 27-35) with a 63. Gerri Murphy and Eva Sulprizio tied for low net honors with a 48.5.

Gail Nelson won the third flight with a 71, while Beth White took low net with a 56.

Empire Ranch sponsors golf trip

Empire Ranch is inviting local golfers to sign up for a golfing road trip to Pahrump Dec. 4-5.

The First Tee of Northern Nevada has scheduled a golf tournament for Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

Gussow, Allen win

at Thunder Canyon

Jeff Gussow and Buz Allen combined for a 60 to win the Men's Day Blind Draw tournament at Thunder Canyon Country Club on Sept. 24.

Tony Kane and Ron Babey were second at 62, while Carl Baker and Greg Wenzel were third at 63.

Gayle Block, Bianca Daykin and Ryan Zaccaro combined for a 110 to win the Ladies Day Front 9 Shamble-Back 9 Reverse Cha Cha Cha event at Thunder Canyon.

Kathy Cockerill, Brooke Nielsen, Peggy Wilkinson and Shryl Bailey were second at 114. Lynn Greenman, Thelma Beye, Earleen Chandler and Sharon Smith were third at 120.

The Spoke leads way in Mosconi Division

The Spoke leads by one point after the first week of play in the Mosconi Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

The Spoke has six points, while Big Dogs and Rack Fink are next with five. Edwin Scrivner of Rack Busters leads the 6-7 tier with 11 points. Matthew Hagan of Cues Yer Daddy leads the

4-5 tier with five points. There is a 14-way tie for first place in the 2-3 tier. All 14 players have three points.

All Work & No Play leads the Comstock Division with 292 points, nine ahead of Dean's Machine.

Don Allred of Scratch Masters leads the 6-9 tier with 10 points, while Daniel McRae is second with nine. Dennis Sisson Jr. of Big Dogs and Robert Matteson of Rack Busters are tied for the lead in the 4-5 tier with 16 points apiece. Lisa McCuiston of T&S leads the 1-3 tier with 17 points.

Whitt, Saarem win

at Fall Classic

Adam Whitt and Ashley Saarem, standouts for Carson High's boys and girls tennis programs won the men's and women's singles championship at the recently completed Carson Tennis Club Fall Classic at Carson High School.

In men's doubles, Hersch Herschman and Bob Beutenmiller beat Chuck Selover and Victor Betancourt for the Century A title. Steve Crouch and Stephen West beat Frank Blankenship and Greg Garver for the B title.

In women's doubles, Peggy Cole and Karen Presson beat DeAnn Fipps and Eleanor Lockwood for the A title. Geraldine Hord and Julie Bean beat Diane Hilliard and Marriela Durandegui for the B crown. Caitlin Dalessio and Angela Cannon won the C title over Abby Hersey and Hannah Novak.

In mixed doubles Laura and Jay Wiggins beat Jeff Estep and Eleanor Lockwood for the A title. Lee and Losoney Ruch beat Stephen West and Robin Meyer in the B flight/ Saarem and Michael Lang won the C title over Mathew Boggs and Krista Stocke.

• In a junior tournament held in Carson City in August, McKenna Levitt (16s), Katie Gardner (14s), and Abby Large (12) won in the Girls Challenger, while Madelyn Landerfield (14-under) and Sasha Munoz-Edmonds (12-under) won novice titles.

In boys play, Blake Sly (18-and under), Wesley Ott (16-and-under), Adam Large (10 and 12-under) all won Challenger titles.

Will Muir won in the 16-and-under novice category.
