As part of the Literacy for Life campaign, Nevada Appeal Publisher Niki Gladys has awarded $2,000 to local literacy organizations.
In a presentation last week at the Carson City Library Board, Gladys presented $1,000 each to the Library Foundation and the English-as-a-Second-Language In-Home Program.
"It seemed fitting to share this award with the Library Foundation, an organization that constantly contributes to many forms of literacy in our community," Gladys said. "They're making this a better place to live."
Pat Glick, who accepted the award on behalf of the foundation, said the funds would go to building a new library.
Director Florence Phillips accepted the check for her organization that provides free in-home English tutoring.
"This check is going to take care of 17 new adults on my waiting list," Phillips said. "They are waiting for books to learn to read, write and speak English."
Gladys said the organization is a good fit.
"The ultimate goal of the Literacy for Life campaign is to impact our community's poverty level and improve our quality of life in Carson City and surrounding areas," she said. "We were pleased to make a donation to the ESL program as this money will go directly to purchasing material to support those learning to speak, read and write English. This will allow ESL students a better chance at supporting themselves and ultimately contributing to a healthier Carson City."
The Nevada Appeal received the $2,000 for last year's Literacy for Life campaign through the charitable fund of the Nevada Appeal's parent company Swift Communications.
The Bessie Minor Charitable Fund is dedicated to promoting literacy and educational enrichment.
