Francis (Frank) Xavier Holub, age 77, died at Evergreen Care Center in Carson City, on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010.
Born Jan. 15, 1933 in Wauwatosa, Wis., to George H. Holub and Elizabeth (Freidbacher) Holub, he attended Nevada City elementary school and graduated from Mount St. Mary's High School in Grass Valley, Calif. He served his country for four years in the U.S. Navy submarine fleet.
He hired on as a guard at San Quentin Penitentiary for a brief time before meeting his future bride, Patricia Davidson Tarpey. They married on Oct. 31, 1958 in Virginia City.
Frank and Pat made their permanent home in Carson City for the past 53 years. Frank was employed by the U.S. Forest Service and then the State of Nevada where he worked in the data processing and computer services department for 34 years. Frank retired in 1993 as a department supervisor.
After retirement the couple traveled extensively. Their interests dovetailed, as Frank custom made hundreds of frames for the watercolors Pat painted throughout the years. Throwing pottery and chainsaw carvings of bears and squirrels were a source of pride resulting from Frank's own artistic endeavors.
He was a member of the Julia Bullette Chapter of E Clampus Vitus and was a member of the Carson City Sertoma Club for more than 30 years.
He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and for taking on the responsibility of raising Pat's three children. He had found his soul mate in Pat and her children were a part of the package that he embraced without hesitation. He will be sorely missed by his family, many friends and extended family at Tahoe Timber Trails.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Holub; three stepchildren; Michael F. Tarpey (Margaret), Thomas P. Tarpey, and Terri L. Srch, all of Reno; eight grandchildren: Michael A. Tarpey, Jennifer Tarpey, Patrick Tarpey, Missy Tarpey, Susan Srch, William Srch (Gayle), Timothy Srch (Loretta), and Brian O'Donnell (Muffy) and six great-grandchildren: Kerri and Kristina Tarpey, Mike and Scott Srch and Sean and Mac O'Donnell and several nieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Dorothy Stevenson, Shirley Notestine and Elizabeth Weatherwax, and his niece, Katherine Rodderick.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7 at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church, 3000 Lompa Lane, Carson City, with a Celebration of Life to follow immediately in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Carson Sertoma Club, P.O. Box 69, Carson City, NV 89702 to benefit their endowment for the hearing impaired. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Walton's Funeral Home, 1281 N. Roop Street, Carson City, NV
