Shoppers were checking out Carson City's Kohl's on Tuesday before the department store stages its grand opening ceremony this morning.

As she was sizing up some new sweaters, Marlisa Hartman, 51, said she came from Minden to check out the new store, 3871 S. Carson St.

"It's just nice to see what beautiful things I've seen so far," she said. "I could spend hours here."

The Carson City store is one of 30 opening this year, including 21 this fall. It's Nevada's 12th Kohl's location.

After attracting about 3,000 applications, the department store is now employing 130 people in Carson City.

Heidi Flansberg, 20, said she often drives to Reno to shop at Kohl's. Now, the Carson City native said she'll be able to stay closer to home.

"Not only is it a new store for Carson, but it's taken care of an empty building in Carson," Flansberg said.

The Kohl's is located inside of the former Mervyns.

Ardith Cross, 80, said she was scouting the store out on Tuesday and plans to return for some future shopping. She's lived in Carson City for 45 years.

"Any time we can get a vacancy filled," Cross said. "We need them."

The grand opening starts at 6:45 a.m. with a ribbon cutting. Doors open at 7 a.m.
