COLLEGE: WNC softball, baseball teams swept by Salt Lake

Western Nevada College's softball team played two more seven-inning games against nationally ranked Salt Lake Community College before losing 8-2 and 4-2 Saturday at Edmonds Sports Complex.

"The girls never quit," WNC coach Leah Wentworth said. "We're getting better. It was a good start to the second half."

In the first Scenic West Athletic Conference series between the teams, Salt Lake outscored WNC 37-2. This time around, it was 25-4.

Ashley Hall scattered 12 hits over seven innings for WNC. She struck out three and walked one.

WNC took a 2-1 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a run-scoring double by Megan Hein and a run-scoring triple by Hall. Salt Lake tied the game at 2 in the second and then scored single runs in the third and fourth.

Hall, Hein and Sara Cudahy collected two hits apiece. Tori Hynick, Jordan Thomas and Cassie Vondrak added a hit apiece.

WNC had chances in the sixth and seventh, but were unable to convert first and second situations in either inning.

In the opener, WNC starter Jamie Klopatek gave up two two-run homers in the first three innings, as Salt Lake went ahead 4-2.

Thomas went 2-for-3, while DiSera, Cudahy and Melanie Pfeiffer all added a hit.

BASEBALL: WNC SWEPT

SALT LAKE CITY - The Wildcats dropped out of first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference for the first time this season after losing 9-2 and 4-3 Saturday.

WNC dropped to 17-3, while Salt Lake is 18-2.

"Salt Lake is a formidable team," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "Salt Lake's pitching shut down the best offensive team in the Scenic West this weekend. Their lineup is tough 1 through 9."

In the opener, WNC gave up four in the fourth to fall behind 4-0, and the Bruins scored four more in the seventh. Brandon Jackson worked 3-plus innings and took the loss. Beau Day went 2-for-2 to lead the Wildcats.

The second game was tied in the seventh, and Salt Lake won it in the seventh with a double. Two WNC outfielders dove for the ball, and it got by allowing the runner to score.

WNC trailed 3-0 at one point, but the Wildcats battled back to a 3-3 tie in the fifth thanks to a run-scoring triple to Chris Woolley, a run-scoring single by Sean Potkay and an infield out by Zach Hendrix.
