Senate nixes write-in candidates on Nevada ballots

(AP) - The Senate buried a bill that would have allowed write-in candidates for state and federal offices on Nevada election ballots.

Republican Sen. Joe Hardy of Boulder City said he proposed SB269 after last year's Alaska Senate race, when incumbent U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski lost the GOP primary and mounted an unprecedented write-in campaign to win re-election in November.

The bill would have allowed candidates to file as a write-in contender after the June primary until mid-July.

The bill died Tuesday on the Senate floor on a vote of 1-20.

Hardy was the lone supporter.
