AL: Ninth-inning slam by Cleveland beats Tigers

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Santana hit a grand slam with one out in the ninth inning to give Cleveland a 9-5 win over the Detroit Tigers as the surging Indians extended their home winning streak to 11 games Friday night.

It was the latest dramatic win for the Indians, who mobbed Santana at home plate after the switch-hitter drove a 3-1 pitch from Joaquin Benoit (0-1) over the right-field wall.

Chris Perez (1-1) pitched a perfect inning for the win as Cleveland twice overcame three-run deficits to earn its fourth straight win overall and hand the Tigers their fourth consecutive loss. The Indians remained unbeaten at Progressive Field since April 2 - their longest streak at home since winning 13 in a row in 1996.

Asdrubal Cabrera's two-run homer in the seventh tied the score. Matt LaPorta hit a solo homer off Tigers starter Max Scherzer to tie it at 5 in the seventh.

Cleveland has 17 wins in April, the most by the franchise in 111 years in the AL.

Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer off Indians starter Jeanmar Gomez.

Angels 8, Rays 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Mark Trumbo homered and drove in four runs, Ervin Santana won for the first time this season and Los Angeles tagged Tampa Bay ace David Price.

Trumbo, who entered with one hit in 20 at-bats over his previous seven games, had two hits, including a two-run homer. The Angels have won nine of 13 road games this year.

Santana (1-3) stopped a personal seven-start winless streak, dating back to last season, by allowing four runs - one earned - and four hits over six innings.

Matt Joyce hit a three-run homer for the Rays, who had won five in a row.

Price (3-3), coming off three consecutive wins, gave up five runs and a career-high 12 hits in 4 1-3 innings.

Blue Jays 5, Yankees 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Ricky Romero got right back up after a frightening line drive flattened him, twice retired Alex Rodriguez in dicey spots and pitched Toronto past New York.

Jose Bautista hit his AL-leading ninth home run and J.P. Arencibia also connected off Freddy Garcia (1-1) for the Blue Jays. Rajai Davis returned from the disabled list and stole two bases, then scored when reliever David Robertson botched a first-and-third pickoff play and made a wild throw.

Robinson Cano hit a pair of solo home runs for the Yankees, including a shot in the eighth inning. New York went on to load the bases with one out, but Derek Jeter struck out and Nick Swisher grounded out.

A winner on opening day, Romero (2-3) had gone 0-3 in four starts since. Jon Rauch earned his fifth save.

In the third, Mark Teixeira hit a line drive directly at Romero's head. The left-hander somehow managed to catch the ball inches from his face, and the impact sent him sprawling backward on the mound.

Mariners 5, Red Sox 4

BOSTON (AP) - Jason Vargas pitched seven innings for his first victory of the season and Seattle took advantage of Daisuke Matsuzaka's injury to beat Boston for its fourth straight win.

Jack Cust hit a go-ahead double in the seventh as the Mariners roughed up reliever Bobby Jenks (1-2), who was booed after allowing two runs in the inning and coughing up a one-run lead.

Vargas (1-2) gave up eight hits and four runs.

Justin Smoak drove in two runs and Brandon League earned his sixth save as the Mariners held Boston hitless after the fourth inning.

Mike Cameron homered twice for the Red Sox, who opened their 11-game homestand by losing for the third time in four games.

Matsuzaka was pulled in the fifth with tightness in his right elbow. He had already thrown 81 pitches before Ichiro Suzuki led off with a single.

Royals 4, Twins 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jarrod Dyson scored on a sacrifice fly in the eighth and Kansas City rallied to snap a six-game losing streak.

Kansas City trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth when Wilson Betemit doubled with one out and moved to third on Kila Ka'ahiue's single. After Dyson ran for Ka'ahiue, Betemit scored on catcher Drew Butera's throwing error to second with Dyson advancing to third.

Dyson then came home on Alcides Escobar's pop up to shallow left that shortstop Alexi Casilla caught with his back to the infield.

Blake Wood (1-0) worked 1 2-3 scoreless and Joakim Soria pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save.

Alex Burnett (0-1), just called up from Triple-A Rochester, took the loss.

Orioles 10, White Sox 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Matt Wieters homered and drove in four runs Friday night, and Baltimore won in Chicago's first game without suspended manager Ozzie Guillen.

Luke Scott also homered and Brian Roberts drove in three runs for the Orioles. Jake Arrieta (3-1) pitched five solid innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks.

John Danks (0-4) gave up five runs on eight hits and a walk in only six innings, as the White Sox lost for the 12th time in 16 games.

Guillen was suspended the first two games of the series by Major League Baseball after he was ejected on Wednesday and posted derogatory comments on Twitter. Bench coach Joey Cora managed the team in Guillen's place.
