For his Eagle Scout project, Grant Brewer, 17, will be hosting a food drive, Ending Empty Bellies, at the Retail Drive Walmart on Aug. 27.
Food collected will benefit Food for Thought, FISH and the Ron Wood Family Resource Center.
"There's a lot of need going on right now," he said. "They're all just about running out of food, and there's a lot of time before the next big push at Thanksgiving."
He is asking for non-perishable food items to stock the pantries of the food banks at Friends in Service Helping and the Ron Wood Family Resource Center.
He will also be sending supplies to Food for Thought, a nonprofit that discreetly provides meals to school children who not have food over the weekend.
He said the food banks are looking for high-protein items, like peanut butter, beans and chili.
Food for Thought, he said, is in need of single-serving items that can be heated in the microwave.
On Aug. 20, Brewer and his supporters will go door-to-door on the west side of town handing out plastic bags. They are asking residents to fill the bags and bring them to the drive the following week.
The drive will be 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 27 at the north Walmart.
"We're hoping to collect 5,000 pounds of food," he said, "so we'll need a lot of help."
