Carson High School staff is excited to be back in the classroom. The year started out with the news from the new vice principal Joe Girdner that CHS had made Adequate Yearly Progress for the 2010-11 academic school year, thus congratulating all the staff on their efforts in making success a possibility for all the students of CHS.

The labors of former vice principal Carl Henry cannot go unnoticed as he worked tirelessly to make sure staff and students were on track to meet and exceed AYP goals.

CHS would like to wish Mr. Henry a much deserved and relaxing retirement.

Students entered the school on Monday to the smells of freshly painted walls and floors.

For culinary teacher Penny Reynolds the summer was one of jubilation for the culinary program at CHS as our school was notified that we had won recognition as being in the top 20 culinary education institutes in the United States by the National Center of Hospitality Studies.

This award offers the students in CHS Culinary Arts a wide variety of resources, notification of events, camps and special functions developed for them by the teachers of the programs.

Also part of her award, Macy attended space camp this summer in Hunstville, Ala., and will be attending the Next Steps conference at Princeton in September.

Carson High School is going through an accreditation process overseen by Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. Through this process, CHS will create a five-year vision for school improvement, which includes the evaluation of curriculum objectives, learning environment, and community involvement.

CHS must be accredited for student transcripts to be accepted by other accredited institutions and all colleges or universities. Without accreditation a CHS diploma will not be recognized as valid.

The accreditation process also allows CHS to analyze current learning strengths and weaknesses in order to improve education. For the process to be meaningful and effective, CHS needs your input.

We are asking members of the Carson City community to take a short survey. You can access the survey at www.carsonhigh.com. Surveys need to be completed by Sept. 9. Surveys are available in Spanish as well.
